Much respect for getting after that job !
You can absolutely take the engine out from the top. That's actually the method how the manufacturer recommends removing the engine. That's the only way to do it if you do not have a lift/hoist. But, obviously, taking it from the bottom is easier.
What a horrible aftermarket grille, it's hideous! Kudos for engine swap, though!
