i'm assuming these detents don't sit in the transmission oil as those seals don't look to be fluid resistant. if so, howcome no lube was used on the sliders? are they teflon/cerflon coated etc or tranny oil lubed?

The e46 gearbox might be bulletproof but the stock shifter feels like garbage on track imo. Maybe a CAE shifter is in order for the S14?
