Yes it must be torqued exactly to spec- by hand is close to impossible I

Yes, I did get it sorted. I had torqued the bolts on the pressure plate and
flywheel incorrectly.
Removed the trans again, re-torqued those bolts to the right ft-lbs, and it
has run perfectly ever since.
