Thanks so much for this video mate. Managed to repair the lock on my MK3 GTI for just the cost of the parts, the dealership wanted muchos £££££. I get such a great buzz from fixing things too! Great video.
Great video was realy helpfull but for a quick fix you could also chance the left with the right handle 😉
hey man . great video, very helpful ,but read every comment and none can help me without asking u my question , i have the same exact problem with my 2001 cabrio. i did read the description of your video it said 1995-2002 cabrios can be fixed like that . i just want to be sure before i do anything because my key is a laser key , would it have any change in the part , part number , and the way to fix the problem ? if you can reply a.s.a.p thank you very much
How do you get the handle out if the cylinder will not turn 1/4… (will not turn at all)?
This just happen to me.
First i tried to do it myself, but couldnt figure out how to switch my driver and passenger door handles n cylinder, then i checked out youtube and did it in seconds.

replacing the entire door handle is more of a pain in the arse, if it’s just the part with the hook that’s broken. I fixed mine with this spare part off ebay at £2.50:

The main thing is to align the parts when replacing the lock with the new parts in- you have to remember to have the key at a 1/4 turn and get the handle shoved well over to the right (if fixing rh door) so that the handle pull mechanism can catch round the metal door open lever.
70 to rekey a handles tumblers to match the key. last time I did it.

Could you just buy a door handle from ebay and replace the keys from the cylinder? Just wondering because that would be cheaper and you wouldn’t need different keys.

Wow, $60 for a kit to fix a $20 door handle. Search for a new door handle, they have em at many online retailers for $20!!

This has Just Happened to me. When i bought it, only passenager side was working. now that too has failed. just bought the kit. Wish me luck.

Great video but I’m running into an issue with a completely different type of lock. Wouldn’t happen to’ve worked on this type of problem with the side cut (laser cut) keys would you? I think it’s a similar fix but the connection from the paddle/rod to the cylinder looks to be different.
Wow. This is the greatest car how-to video I’ve ever seen! This happened to one door on my 94 golf a few years ago and we just left it, then this week on a trip out of town, it happened to the other door. We had to go in thru the trunk, triggering the immobilizer. We were stuck!! We found this video, got a friend to drive us to the dealer for the part, then fixed it in no time. Thank you soooo much! You saved us a tow and a repair!!

Powdered graphite is a better lube than what ever was in that can. Liquid lube attracts dirt.

for me was to get the door handle back in that was the hardest part untill i heard that “click” and everything worked perfectly… many thnxs saved me some money to let garage do it.. and the new cilinder cost me 28 euro’s
