Volvo XC90 Spark Plug & Ignition Coil Replacement DIY (2015-2021 SPA Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum, T6, T8)

Volvo XC90 Spark Plug & Ignition Coil Replacement DIY (2015-2021 SPA Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum, T6, T8)

►The ignition system in your Volvo XC90 is responsible for providing the spark that ignites the fuel sprayed into the cylinder. In most modern cases, the system includes the spark plugs and the ignition coils, both of which can fail and create running problems. You may experience power loss, rough running, and reduced fuel mileage as they lose effectiveness.

Worn plugs and coils aren’t anything to be worried about; they’re meant to wear out over time. However, you should replace them at the first sign of trouble if not at their Volvo recommended interval. Replacing the coils and plugs is straightforward and won’t require fancy tools; just some time and patience.

In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro’s Professional DIY’er replaces the spark plugs and ignition coils on a SPA-chassis Volvo XC90.

@Victorcontreras-i7h says:

is there a video on replacement of xc90 2016 starter?

@sstoeckl says:

Picking up a 22 XC90 tomorrow…looks like this is easy peasy…one question though – no need for anti seize thread lube on the spark plug threads?

@HenrikBentel says:

Did this job today. Super easy, minus the ignition coil bolt I snapped in half 😀 but otherwise easy and stutter when turning off engine is gone. Keep the SPA content coming!

Hey Mike, I have the Polestar version XC90 T6. I’m assuming the plugs are the same heat range as the other supercharged and turbocharged models? My first Volvo, but no stranger to working on my own cars, and hotrods. Just slightly concerned about the Polestar tune requiring a colder plug. Dealers want almost $500 for this service and I think it’s nuts! Been changing plugs since I could walk.
Also anyone know what the factory spark plug gap spec is? Or a website I can go to for all of these specs and part numbers? Again 1st Volvo so I’m a little in the dark trying to catch up. Thanks!

@sandyb.8167 says:

Hy, For V60 t8 Polestar, it's the same process ??

@SterlingSigurdsen says:

What are the codes that it will send? Will it also cause the turtle mode to activate?

@11irida says:

Does this apply to v90 2.0 t5 engine?

@morningstar275 says:

Can you do an episode on replacing all fluids on a T8 hybrid. As well as chronic and common issues with this powertrain?
Thank. I really appreciate your work

@Flyme888 says:

For T8 engine is same procedure ?

@phlose says:

Are these parts better than OEM?

@phlose says:

Can I do this on my own?

@markovukasinovic6931 says:

My good people at FCP – any chance you can swap out the AC compressor on this XC90? I have quotes over $4,000 to do this at various shops and this would be a gift from the heavens to have a detailed video like this to help guide me along the process. Keep up the good work!!!

@ThePasta22 says:

Excellent video! any chance you'd be able to make a video on Fuel Injector replacement on the 2.0L 4 cylinder?

@nathanmiersma2328 says:

Would love to see the “what to do next” for 2016-2021 XC90 from misfire codes. (Oily plugs; or oil in plug wells; or oily coil ends) all the way to removing the valve cover and replacing gasket. Your videos are incredibly helpful and extremely well done.

@johnvest4216 says:

Fantastic video guys thanks so much.

@johnowen8835 says:

– great job – my good man

@KAbbas-z8r says:

Any video on camshaft belt replacement for 2018 xc90?!

@ivanovton says:

Thank you for the video! I have a 2019 S60 T6 R Design. Would it be the same?

@DavesPhotoTravel says:

Can you please do an episode on front strut replacement ?

@glossolalian says:

I have a misfire on cylinder 1 and am curious if cylinder 1 is the one on the far left (passenger side of the engine bay) or far right (driver side of the engine bay)?

Thank you for the incredible guide!

@overcooked123 says:

Nice video! Just got this done at the dealership since I bought the prepaid maintenance. Please post some brake replacement videos for the SPA Volvos!

@obsesivegamer says:

Great video thanks for providing volvo guides!

@deanG2026 says:

I changed mine , 2019 xc90 t6 . The spark plug number 3 have the tread wet of oil . What could it cause that?

@pbake01 says:

When getting the plugs and coils as a kit, are the sparkplugs already correctly pre-gapped, or is that something we would need to do? Does the kit come with a gap tool?
