►Volvo’s SI6 engine is one of the better six-cylinders released in the last few decades. Regular maintenance makes them reliable, powerful, and good on gas. Among the maintenance requirements will eventually be a PCV oil trap replacement. The oil trap was Volvo’s modern attempt at the PCV system and was better than their previous designs. However, it still has a service life and will need replacing.
Luckily, replacing the oil trap is a reasonably undemanding process. It sits atop the engine on the valve cover and is held on by a few easily accessed bolts; expect the replacement to take around 30 minutes. I just did this successfully today. The video was a great help but it still took me most of the day and was not fun. What would have made it easier would be a 1/4 inch drive torx 30 ratchet with an assortment of extensions. This was a 2014 new to me xc70 and it obviously had never been done before. Very ugly inside.
Couple tips having just done this. Be careful removing the Oetiker clamp (shown at 3:30) because if the nipple breaks off the intake tube the replacement tube is another $300. Also, the electrical connection shown at the 11:00 mark is a lot easier to reconnect if you do that before bolting the oil trap housing back down onto the engine. Once in place the little rubber hose interferes with the connector so being able to shift the oil trap around helps a lot.
Is there some sort of reprogramming of engine computer to be done after?
This is the same procedure for a Mk1 or P2 xc90, and the if the whole assembly includes the membrane or diaphragm, also how many hose clamps I need to replace?
For everyone about to change it: if its cold where youre at, then make sure the engine is a little warm because otherwise the sealing will stick unbelievably and you wont be able to remove it.

How can I diagnose my car for this? My 2010 xc60 blocks and turns off while driving after unstable gear shifting, it is automatic transmission and there was a leak in the intake that was glued together and i couldnt noticed another breakage at all and for everything ive noticed, there should be a huge hole in it.
My car shows a “System Too Rich” message.
I already cleaned the MAF sensor, but the problem is still there.
The engine sometimes runs fine, but then suddenly doesn’t respond to the accelerator.
Sometimes it won’t accelerate, and then it suddenly surges or revs up by itself.
The car feels unstable while driving.
The engine load at start-up or idle is around 45–50%, which seems too high.
The engine gets a bit hot, more than normal.
My fuel consumption is around 17 L/100 km.
The car threw oil, but the engine oil level still looks normal.
I thought the leak was transmission fluid, but my mom thinks it’s engine oil.
I’m worried it might be a blown head gasket.
I suspect there could be an air intake leak somewhere.
My battery and spark plugs are brand-new premium parts, so I don’t think they’re the cause.
A question: What is the size of the T30 bolt ? I dropped one, and I wanna buy a replacement ?

Great tutorial Mike, I have a question. I recently had to replace my xc60 oil trap that had gone bad(cracked) and check engine light was on. After 400km travel, i had engine misfire issue,dirty throttle body and leaking camshaft seal. are they related?

I see there is a short air tube connecting to the intake, but why there is no such tube/pipe on 3.2 natural aspirated engines in XC90. Wondering how they are ventilated.
Just attempting to do this now .. PSA: the intake pipe has a connector attached to it .. next to battery housing … 4-wire. The insulation / sleve has pretty bad rubbing against the thick wire harness to the right of it.
How long start to finish ?
Can this bad pcv oil trap cause misfire at idle, poor performance ?

This was great and timely. I will be doing this Monday in addition to fixing a cracked air duct and (hopefully) the upstream oxygen sensor. Any hints on the best way to get at the oxygen sensor? Even with the battery tray removed, it's super tight from the side.
