Volvo Serpentine Belt and Tensioner Replacement – (S40, S60, S80, V70, XC90)

Volvo Serpentine Belt and Tensioner Replacement – (S40, S60, S80, V70, XC90)

►Replacing the Serpentine Belt and & Tensioner on a P2 chassis Volvo is an easy job to complete requiring about an hour of your time and a little bit of patience. Jason shows you how to replace your worn out serpentine belt, which can be identified by either cracking belt ribs or the bearing on the serpentine belt tensioner is worn out and noisy. Both can harm other parts on your Volvo if failure were to occur.

Terry McBroom says:

Ok, so, I replaced the tensioner and tried to install a new belt per the instructions in the video. I used a T-60 wrench to pivot the tensioner clockwise as far as it would go. I spent the next hour trying to slip the belt onto the P/S pump, no luck. The problem was getting the belt to slide across the grooves in the pully (impossible), simply not enough clearance. It occurred to me that maybe that's why there are no, -0-, grooves on the tensioner pully. I wrapped the belt around everything except the tensioner pully, pivoted the tensioner as far as possible, and 5 minutes later, with a bit of effort, the belt was ON!!!!!

Tom Martella says:

Three hours, start to finish. I suspect my NAPA belt was a half inch too short!

Tom Martella says:

"Go ahead and finish installing the belt". The hardest part of the entire process. Just make sure you use OEM parts – not NAPA, AutoZone, etc.

Dean Winchell says:

Does this procedure work for the 2.9l engine?

Bruce Szymanski says:

Re. The T60 and the 3/8 vs. 1/2 extended handle socket wrench…you can use a 14mm socket and detension the tensioner using the tensioner pulley bolt. No T60 or 1/2 inch socket wrench required. Solves the lack of depth issue too, and lots of trouble finding specialized tools IMO

Redentor Cuyugan says:

Excellent video! Just what I was looking for to repair my old XC90. My serpentine belt just popped off and later noticed that the tensioner pulley broke off.

Bobby Peru says:

everything looks easy on youtube
I can't even separate the reservoir from expansion tank…

Mark Hatcher says:

Would really like to see a newer Volvo serpentine belt
Changed. Say in the 2011- 2015 range. The serpentine belt is on the other side of the engine compartment and
Certainly has a few
More obstacles to work around. Thank You

What are the torque specs for the tensioner?

Don Chinnici says:

Thanks tons for these, and all the FCP videos. On this job, however, my Torx 60 is too long to get into place. It's made for a 3/8", but that, plus the wrench is too long. I think I need to find one perhaps as yours, that fits into a socket.

Barry Robinson says:

doesnt look like bad job but im stuck and totally frustrated before i even get the the mechanics—i've spent 45 minutes after looking at this and other vids and havent found that T60 adjuster yet—fed up before i barely get into it
