Replacing an alternator on a P2 chassis Volvo is a moderate level repair which usually takes no longer than 3 hours to replace. Before ordering your alternator from FCP Euro, be sure to check the amperage rating which is listed on a tag on the back of the alternator.

Well I most definitely went the direction of Stephen Morrissey's comment. I watched the video, didn't bother calling Volvo for a quote, but then watched the video a couple more times and did a write up to walk me through it on my 2007 S60R. I didn't have to swap out the alternator but I did have to swap out the voltage regulator that i did buy from FCP Euro. I used this video as a guideline to performing the task on my vehicle as some of the bolt sizes are different on my 07. The good part in this is I didn't have to perform a few of the more daunting parts. Because I actually didn't have to remove the alternator, but just move it around within it's area to swap out the regulator, I didn't have to remove the top boost pipe, the radiator fan, fresh air vent, drain the coolant or remove the coolant hose. This saved me a lot of time!! I do have to chuckle at another comment for a sense of familiarity in having done this now. Though with quite a few things to do, this video can be deceiving. They take a 6 hour job and turn it into a 13 minute video that looks pretty effortless. They never show you struggling to loosen and remove the power steering bolts let alone put them back on. The serpentine belt was easy to remove but a little more daunting to put back on. You struggle to work in a very limited space where you may only get one click of movement on the socket driver. This project just takes a little patience but this video does walk you through it nicely. Thanks for the good detail in creating this video it most definitely helped.
When removing the to nuts from the back of the alternator. There is the positive, which is the one in the bottom. The one in top, only the nut is there. Isn't there suppose to be a ground? Or is the alternator grounded when bolted? Thanks for the great video…
Many thanks for doing this video – it's very well put together and really useful. It's just enabled me to replace the alternator on my wife's XC70 MY06 163bhp. A little bit simpler than your s60 as there is a bit more room to slide the alternator out without having to take the radiator fan assembly out, and the turbo pipes are all at the front of the engine. I ended up leaving the PAS pump in place, but took the hoses off, and removed the lower pipe from the intercooler in front of the belt to give a bit more space undoing the bolts on the alternator and the AC compressor. The most useful bit of info was on how to de-tension the serpentine belt with the T60 bit – I'd never have managed without that info. Thanks again.

Question, what is the 3rd connection for that I'm seeing on the alternator? You have the spade terminal connection, the positive connection, but what is that black bolt connection for to the side of where the spade terminal goes?

Need to keep topping up the radiator coolant after Running the engine. Repeat this topping up until the system is free of trapped air.
