Your that go to dude on youtube for me. Thanks man I got a 96 850. Now when I try to start it it freaks out on the dash board and flashes lights and wipers go off far after I take the key out
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
I have an xc70 and I need to check out the antenna switch in the steering. This was the only video that showed me how to remove the plastic. I think I’ve got it from here. Thanks.
You are welcome. Every manufacturer has their weaknesses. I like to know what they are so I can fix or avoid them. I think the ignitions should be replaced every 10 years or 100,000 miles. Along with the fuel injector relay.
Robert, your ignition switch procedure is accurate and concise. I transformed our unreliable Volvo 850 which was getting bad to worse (crank, no start) to a completely functioning vehicle we can now count on. Can’t believe they designed it with contact points and weak springs to hold them together. Thanks a million.
It is part of the hazard switch.
I have a question and a requset as well. Do you know how to replace a flasher for the volvo?
If so could you post a video of you doing it?
You are welcome.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks Robert for the advice! I appreciate it.
Im gonna have to do this soon. Big help man thanks!
I would start by having the battery tested and make sure the battery connections are cleaned and lubricated. After that maybe check the ignition. Not sure if the S60’s have issues with the ignitions or not. Maybe check SwedeSpeed.
Hi Robert, I have a 2004 Volvo S60. Lately it’s been experiencing electrical issues. If I turn the keys too fast the engine won’t turn over. I usually have to turn the keys slowly, in stages, for the engine to start. The most frustrating problem is sometimes as the engine is starting the clock and information display resets itself. Do you think these issues are related to the ignition switch or something more complicated? Thank you for your time!
Thanks for the input Jefferson. Not sure why your screws were different. Maybe someone changed them.
On my 1996 850, all four screws are T25. I’m not sure which year Volvo changed this, but be prepared for that possibility. I spent several frustrating minutes trying to get the upper cover screws out with a T15 tool before I realized what the problem was.
960 Is pretty much the same. The only difference is that you have to remove the tilt wheel handle, #2 hex bit. The 960 ignitions work well when you turn them back a little. I drove my 960 with a bad ignition for over 2 years. It was like a security feature for me.
great information. im thinking the 960 should be similar, right?
Oh yeah lol, I forgot about that push in screw. Thanks a lot!
No, your day running light feature is on. To turn it off turn the little screw by the knob so that it is horizonal. Push in and turn.
When I start my car, the headlights remain on when in the off position. Also I noticed a slight burnt wire smell. Could this be a result of a bad ignition switch, is there a way to know when it goes bad?
You are welcome.
I certainly think my ABS module is going out on me, reading more about it, they fail very early in these cars. I am surprised mine made it this long. It is to the point now where ABS and TRACS OFF lights are on all the time, I am fairly confident that the problem has nothing to do with the ignition switch. Thanks!
Is it the same on a S70? It happened me today.. Hope you can help me
Thanks a lot! Was trying to use the T25 on all 4 screws, now I know I need the T15 too.
You likely have a bad ABS module. You can contact Mid-West ABS to get a rebuilt unit very affordable.
You got a bad switch. Send it back.
Just replaced the ignition switch in my 1996 850 Turbo, very easy! Thanks for this video. However, my ABS and TRACS lights still will not turn off, so I think it might be something else. I still had the “jiggle the key” to get the car to shift out of park, and to get the headlights to turn on. Any ideas?
You are welcome. Glad it helped.
