To remove the back seat bolster, just grab it at the top and jerk it away from the seat then lift the bottom of it out.
I usually connect the forward end of the supports then the end that attaches to the trunk hinge.
Yes, I have removed one the original struts but cannot get the new strut on the pin behind the back seat. The new struts are the same length as the old struts with the same type as size of hook at the end of the rod.
I read it is easier if you remove the bolster beside the back seat. But how do you do that?
The back side of the support joints have clips that you release to allow them to come loose from the stud.
