Turbo drain tube oil leak repair, seals replacement, Volvo S70, 850, V70, etc. – VOTD

Turbo drain leak: 30 to 60 minutes ($10 / $110 / $160)

In this video I replaced the seals on the turbo drain tube on a Volvo S70 GLT. This process is the same on several Volvo turbocharged cars, 850, XC70, etc.

Hello Robert, on a P80 AWD car, how bad is the angle gear housing in the way? Do you think it has to be removed in order to perform this task? Thanks in advance from The Netherlands.

Sérgio Afonso says:

To change the turbo seal, we just need to drain the coolant or the oil is needed too? Thanks.

The 4K Senator says:

How do you diagnose this leak?

Alex P says:

Ah, that doesn't look too bad. I noticed today how bad mine is really leaking. At least that's where I assume the oil is coming from. I have a drip that is coming down the back of the engine and dripping off the oil pan at the drain plug. From the last time I looked down there, it appears to be coming down from the turbo.

julian marghalle says:

Would you be kind enough to point me in a direction where I can find these seals? I have tried looking many places, including websites that deal with only Volvo OEM parts but I can't seem to find them, or more specifically the seal that goes on the return line into the oil pan.

Thanks

srbinsrpski says:

Can engine burn oil if this gasket end seal are bad?

Alex Charles says:

thanks so much for this video man, made the repair a breeze. glad I didn't have to pay a mechanic for this!

JJ C says:

I just completed this repair on my 1994 850 Turbo and found the video helpful. At first I thought I could get away without loosening the turbo coolant line as I had good access to the oil drain bolts but as you indicated, I needed the extra clearance to pull the tube assembly off! Thanks!

Hi Robert! Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I just purchased my first Volvo, a 1998 V70 Cross Country. I purchased it with what I was told was a leaky turbo (which is one of many issues that needed repairs when I picked it up, most of which I have since remedied with videos from you or ones similar). I am completely unfamiliar with Volvo's, let alone how to repair a leaky turbo. I am a single mom who tries to do as much as I can myself to pinch pennies. Is there anything else you can add or put into laymens terms for me to remember while doing this repair? Things that maybe are standard for someone who works on cars often, but maybe a newbie wouldn't think of? Or the best place to purchase the said turbo seals? It seems a lot of places see my inexperience and gender and try to take advantage of that telling me to purchase additional items I'm not so sure I need to sending me to their buddys shop and gouging me on shop fees I can't afford at the moment. I just want to have a better understanding of what I'm doing and to do a really good job on the car myself so it lasts. I follow instruction well, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything that could be a detriment later for a Volvo rookie like me. Thank you in advance!

Ok this question is totally unrelated to this thread but after replacing my crank seal I put the belts back on aligned the crank pulley to the mark on housing along with the h. Balancer simple all seen to be at 11:00 position except for the cams which are at 12:00 with the timing cover but now car won't start but it turns but it doesn't sound like I'm getting compression I checked the#1 cylinder and it is TDC in relation to the crank pulley markings but I can get it TDC BUT THEN the crank pulley will be at a 5:00 position…. Any tips or advice? I'm getting fuel to the injectors but still no start I'm really getting frustrated a "mechanic " friend of was working on it and I think he put the cams out of alignment by turning them individually:/ any advice sorry to bother you…. But if I had any hair is ripping it out

Hunter Gropp says:

I have a 98 v70 AWD and I think my turbo train is leaking.mine must be different than yours because I don't think I can get to the line unless I take the differential off the transmission

JeFF Chapin says:

It's hard to tell where the oil is leaking because the turning of the belts is throwing the oil everywhere I've pressure washed it twice but there isn't really any oil coming from the cams it seems like it's coming from the right side of the crankshaft case

JeFF Chapin says:

The main area that I notice the oil dripping on the ground is on the passenger side tire although that may be because the car is jacked up but I did pressure wash the engine to see where the oil is coming from it does seem like the crankshaft seal but after removing the sprocket it is dry so I'm totally baffled could it be the oil pump or pump line ? Is that near the crankshaft? I really could use your help or advice on what to check

JeFF Chapin says:

Hey robert I recently purchased an '00 s80 turbo and it has a major oil leak on the right front passenger side down by the crankshaft so I replaced the seal myself but the oil continues to leak horribly but not soo much when you first turn it on but after five min of warming up an revving it up it begins to leak badly after releasing the accelerator the first day I had it I went through 3quarts of oil any ideas?

rayochapin says:

Hey bro! you always help me, my V70 is leaking oil from the intake hose, I guess from the turbo, the problem is that every time I let off the gas the car releases a big puff of smoke, do you think my PCV system might be clogged? I took this car for a family trip and as I type this I am clueless on what to do, I am 14 hundred miles away from home and it is very embarrassing to drive this car in Southern California polluting everywhere I go, it does not smoke at a steady speed, only when I need to slow down and release the gas pedal, I already check the hose, air filter and even took the housing out and no clogged there. I really hope that you can give me an idea. thank you.

I have my S40 2003 1.9T drops of oil down center while parking, had car's back bumper gone black with oil. I got under the car to see if Turbo drain line is leaking but found a black plate under the 5mm allen key its getting difficult to reach it, i saw its totally dry at that point, do you think its the seal connected the oil pan got leaked or any other seal? i cannot even see oil on dipstick but car starts well?

Sean Porter says:

I'd love to see this for the AWD. Thanks all the same.

Charles estep says:

Charles estep says:

Hi Robert I just dropped my oil out of my pan and the oil is like milk

Charles estep says:

I don't think so I watched one of your video about the three was of a blown head gasket it's really close to that I've been told it could be my manifold gasket or my turbo or where my oil filter go there is a seal their

Charles estep says:

Robert I changed my old radiator because it was leaking and after that I blew off my oil line on my new radiator while I was driving it then I parked now I've got oil in my water

Charles estep says:
