Timing belt replacement, P2 Volvo S60, V70, XC90, S80, V50, S40, V40, etc. – VOTD

Timing belt replacement: 3 to 5 hours ($200 / $800 / $1,100)

Crank/harmonic balancer bolt is 36mm.

This is the process if removing the harmonic balancer.
Seal leaks, VVT, front cam seals, etc.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjZFY-1x1Xk

A place to purchase the cam locking tool: https://swedishcarparts.com/parts/754-volvo-850-s70-s40-v70-s80-s60-960-xc90-timing-belt-camshaft-tool-made-in-usa-9995452s

In this video I replaced the timing belt on a 2005 S60 T5 that had dual VVT hubs. I believe this process will work on all of the P2 Volvo’s which include the ones with the single VVT hubs. Some of the hubs will move because they are spring loaded. If that is the case, simply turn the cam in the proper position when installing the belt so the marks are aligned with the cover. You can use a front cam locking tool.

There is NO NEED to remove or loosen a hub unless you need to or are planning to replace a cam seal. In that case you will need to lock the rear of the cams with the cam locking tool and know how to properly reset the VVT hubs. This video DOES NOT show that process.

Thanks for the video Robert! Very nice job – I will be doing mine soon and this helps out a lot. Can you tell me how you get the crank pulley nut tightened up? Do you need a special tool to hold the crankshaft while tightening that huge bolt?

Jack Shelton says:

Robert thanks for the great real world video, not selling just a good honest video. I have done the replacement and have a intake code back. I see by your video I missed what is actually the timing mark. By the way Mitchel does not even tell you what is the timing mark on the crank gear….Thanks again Robert solved my problem sir. Be Blessed Jack Shelton

Thanks for the video, it had some good info, but it totally doesn't apply to my 2008 Volvo V50. I don't have near the room for getting at the timing belt side. I had to raise/lower the engine for different panels that needed to be removed and now I don't have the space needed to physically take the water pump out of the car. I'd like to strangle the Volvo engineers for their lack of thought for water pump replacement and clearance for removing anything on that side of the motor. I had to buy longer wrenches, and special adapters to get the right length for the sockets to fit in the narrow spaces. No one has any video on doing this on a 2008 V50, and now I know why…It was designed to keep backyard mechanics from doing the Volvo mechanics' jobs. Totally frustrating. If you have a newer V50, be sure you know what you're getting into…

Nice quality video, You are a good teacher. I just miss a little bit trying to see the crankshaft marks. I Mean I see the mark on engine block but not in Crankshaft gear. This gear have some marks?? because in block is like two marks for check??

Heather Gossman says:

Thank you for the share Robert. To be correct this does apply to a Volvo v70 2008 ?

Kory Ysen says:

hi Robert I have an 2007 Volvo XC90 3.2 front weel drive what it comes with? timing belt or timing chain?

Jaleb Jaba says:

Hey Robert I have a Volvo XC90 2008 ,I asked the dealer ,and they told me you don't change the timing belt ,it's something else at 105k they couldn't give me a price. Thanks

Blue Falcon says:

Got this, and the water pump done on my 2001 non-turbo, which was almost 40K overdue—first timing belt job ever, and took me over 7 hours. The old belt looked good, but the pulleys were definitely going; a good amount of grease was coming out of those bearings. My near-245K S60 is definitely happier.

This video especially helped with the water pump segment! Thanks!

Siomara Escobar says:

thanks man for the video!!!

skylers nation says:

Hey Robert, just did my timing belt last weekend. Thanks to you and some other people on YouTube I got through it. One thing though, a couple of times my car shook a little bit when I took off from a red light. Only happened twice, same circumstance, taking off from a red light. Do you know why it's doing that. No shaking at all other then those two times. I have a 2003 Volvo s80 non turbo.

VOGELTRON says:

Thanks Robert!!! The more videos I see from different people regarding this procedure the more comfortable I feel with it. Just replaced an Alternator Pulley on my 02 s60 with 230k miles on it thanks in part to all your Videos!!! Much appreciated!!!!!

BlueZomig says:

Oh my goodness! I didn't know you worked on P2 models! This is the project I'm working on right now and man is it a pain at times. I wanna say thank you for putting your camera waaayyyyy down next to the crank to show where that mark is on the block, no other video here on youtube shows it like you did and when I go to finish this up tomorrow, I'm going at it with renewed confidence 😀

chillsgo chillsgo says:
