When your retaining strap breaks, you have two choices, you can buy a complete cap and strap (Volvo part number 31392044) at the dealer for $40-$50 or you can get the strap individually for less than $10. The issue is it doesn’t seem to be replaceable. I couldn’t find any how-to videos for how to fix it so I decided to make my own.

It is pretty straight forward and you just need basic tools.

Step 1: Remove the old broken ring, I used a multi-tool, but you can also use a dremel, a hacksaw, even a reciprocating saw, anything that will allow you to cut through about 1/2 inch deep into 1/8 inch thick plastic. You cut the thickest part of the ring, stopping short of the cap itself.

Step 2: Remove the old ring by twisting at the point you cut and snap it off.

Step 3: Make sure the new ring is aligned with the bottom down and slide it over the handle side of the cap. Use a little pressure to snap the ring into place.

Step 4: Clip the leash on to the hook on the fuel door. It is easier to twist the cap on first, and then attach the leash so it is oriented correctly.

That’s it, you’re done.

Thank-you just the solution to a the very problem I was trying to figure out! I’ve a diesel cap – I’ll need to make sure I buy the correct diameter replacement ring as I assume they may be different sizes.
