DIY – Volvo Fan Controller Replacement

DIY – Volvo Fan Controller Replacement

My wife’s a/c in her 2011 Volvo XC60 would start blowing hot air whenever we were at a stop. This is my DIY journey to fix and how I saved a lot of money. (I know my video editing is cheesey, deal with it)

Thanks for the video. I have a similar issue with my 2012 xc60. Car started and ran fine, came back after several hours to find the battery dead but the primary radiator fan still running (not at full speed but perhaps thats due to the dead battery). Disconnected the fan, attached a jump starter. The car will accept the electrical signal for a few seconds (even start for a second), then it shuts off completely. Completely dead. Checked ECM for liquid or burn marks, its dry. Could it be a blown fuse or a bad short elsewhere?

Thanks same deal here.

I went to Amazon and did not find the module listed? What did I do wrong?

Steve Trezise says:

Did you have to cut the zip ties to get in there? I bought a controller from Rock Auto. It looks like Amazon isn't carrying the one you bought, and apparently there were a lot of failures from the comments I see here. There is one for $247 from Amazon. I paid much less from Rock Auto, but way more that $30. And naturally this had to happen in Phoenix in August. Ugh.

thanks for the tip my man

The Chinese Amazon modules are junk. Mine lasted less than a year. Plus if your fans are getting old and tired they can put more load on the module causing more module failure. I'm replacing module and fan this week with OEM. Buy once, cry once.

Thanks. Worked like a charm, and great tip for that screwdriver.

Module still work? Reviews on amazon are terrible. Thx!!

My journey has not been so fortunate. I replaced this module and the problem still existed. I replaced the fan assembly and the problem still exists. I then replaced the coolant temp sensor and my problem still exists. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Todd Gratehouse says:

VERY HELPFUL!!!! Thanks so much. FYI, the part is $204 from volvo. That's what I just paid. Wished I'd watched this yesterday.

Brett Ryder says:

Ian, great video. Curious though, is your replacement module still working for you? I bought actually two of the cheap $25-30 ones (one from Amazon, one from eBay) and put one in a week ago. It seemingly started to fail today, so now I'm on my backup-backup one. As some of the unhappier Amazon and eBay reviews indicated, I think I'm going to try buying one of the more expensive ($150 on eBay) Gates modules. Which, honestly, they look identical to the cheap ones … so I'm skeptical about who's manufacturing these and whether they can "go the distance".

Alex Bodin says:

Thank you so much!

This is really helpful thankyou
