DIY: Volvo Automatic Shifter Knob Removal

DIY: Volvo Automatic Shifter Knob Removal

Video tutorial on how to remove the automatic shifter knob on a Volvo. This particular shift knob is found on a variety of Volvo models and applies both to the leather, vinyl, and wood style shift knobs. Removing the knob is required when replacing the shifter knob button. This particular car I am working with here is a 2000 Volvo S70.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-none

Procedure:
-first start by either blocking the wheels or applying the vehicle’s parking brake
-if your parking brake has not been used in a longer period of time, you can risk the chance of it sticking on, therefore blocking the wheels would be a safer method
-turn the key into the on position, do not start the vehicle
-some vehicle maybe equipped with a safety lock, therefore put your foot on the brake which will disengage it and pull the shifter back into it’s lowest gear setting
-you can either sit in the front seat or in the rear seating area
-do not kneel on the heated seat as this can damage the heated seat element
-firmly place two hands on the shifter and pull upward
-be careful not to hit yourself in the process
-the shifter will pop right out of place
-as for installation, place the shifter back onto the lever and push it down until it clicks
-the leather boot will need to be pulled back into place on the plastic clips

If your shifter button is sticking, and wont let you take the key out when in park. Do what's in this video, and then take some brake cleaner and spray out the inside of the shift knob, shake it out and wait for the brake cleaner to evaporate, then take some wd-40 or any penetrating oil and spritz just a little bit inside of the shift knob, excess oil will run down the side of the shift knob. Clean it, and then reinstall the shift knob. This has worked for me. Every once in a while I have to clean it out again because it gets gunked up, but it's way less annoying then your key not coming out the ignition.

I have a 1995 940T with a "crumbling shifter" housing. Does this method apply to the older cars such as my own and the 740's? Thanks for any advice!
