The Volvo V40 wagons are shit! rattle traps & too many clips for holding things together. for all of the ‘safety features’ volvo always seems to ‘tout’, there are so many design flaws & just stupid engineering from the slanted windshield (reflects everything) to the NO cupholders/console on some models & then none!?! STAY AWAY FROM VOLVO!!!

thanks all the same mate but I scraped it in the end.I couldn’t afford to keepfuel in it.Tough times these days.got meself a nissan micra.its small and old but so oso cheap to run.

Eastsidegeorgiaboy says:

Damn, that sucks. Do you still have the car, minus the engine? If so, I know some people that can get you an engine for your Volvo for pretty cheap. Engine comes with warranty and everything. If your Volvos year is below 1999, even if it is a T5, the engine wont cost you more than $720 with shipping. 1999 and up cars have variable valve timing, and electronic throttle bodys which push the cost of the 99 and up engines to between $1000 and $1200.00 with shipping included.

thanks all the same mate.but it turns out the mechanics never tightend any of the bolts back up.Water pump went on it in the end and killed it off .:+(

Eastsidegeorgiaboy says:

maybe need new bushings for strut mounts, or cv axle needs to be looked at. I think it is one of your bushings. Look up powerflex bushings. They are polyurethane and should be the last bushings that you will need on that car. They also make motor mounts too.

BuckleysAutoCare says:

@amopower – Yes, replace the entire arm. It comes with ball joint and bushings. It’s a little more expensive (part wise) but you save time and perform a complete job. Thanks for asking. – Greg

Amopower says:

Would you recommend a total control arm replacement if a ball joint goes out like that? Based on prices, it would seem more economical to just but the entire control arm with the ball joint already pressed it, that way you are also gettign brand new control arm bushings.

BuckleysAutoCare says:

Check your struts and struts mounts. Could be an issue and cause a rattle. – Greg

ah4fecksake says:

If a new ball joint and A arm was fitted, why would the original ratteling sound remain.
