Was trying to figure out the same problem on my wife’s VW Beetle. Saw your video and yanked that same fuse, which had just a small amout of carbon on one of the prongs. Hit it with some sand paper and the A/C kicked right in. Thanks for taking the time to post a video on this. Saved me from a big headcache and from pissing away money at a shop to figure it out. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

This was the problem with my 2001 jetta TDI.
Thank You So Much Sam for putting this up. You The Man!

Yan Torres says:

Hi Sam1174 I hope you’re doing well. I was wondering if you know the location of the AC FUSE relay on a jetta mk3 99. Any suggestion please? I want to try replace it.

Jacob Diemer says:

Sam,
Thanks so much for this video! My 2003 Jetta’s A/C has been finicky lately, stopped completely today (95 degrees out). I checked that same fuse & it was burnt up (even partially melted to the fuse box).
I owe you a beer!

ghostmanriding says:

Great video. My 2001 Beetle had the same problem.it’s also a good idea to change the alternator wire at the same time. These fuse box on top of the battery often melt several months or sooner after you replace the fuse. The problem is often the worn out alternator wire causes resistance in the rest of the box, loose fuses, and sometimes a hard to turn fan.If the fuse box melts, they are $22 on Ebay(with fuses), and about $30 to make the new alternator wire (crimp terminals and 4 gauge wire.)

sam1174 says:

There is no need to take off the battery connections.

John Myers says:

Did you have to take the battery connections off? I am about to go and check this fuse and problem right now, its only blowing warm air!!!

lildres123 says:

I changed that fuse but I noticed that it turn off the radiator fan.

Thank you Sam!!! This repair shop quoted me $900 for a new compressor for my 2003 GTI. I spent $3.50 for a box of 30amp fuses and got my a/c back!!! Thank you so much!!!

Yessssssssssssssss you’re the man thanks.

TheRealBangorian says:

That goes for me too man. My AC quit today when it hit 90 degrees and I had a day of highway driving ahead of me. Your video made my day. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

laozhotboi says:

Lol thnks man. I will, as soon as you post a video on how to make 1,500 easy lol

sam1174 says:

That’s awesome! I love hearing stories like that. Thanks for sharing it.

By the way… I’ll split the savings with you. Send me $1500 and we’ll call it even, OK? LOL!

laozhotboi says:

Dude you saved me from cleaning out my wallet! Vw wanted 3,000.00 to fix the compressor. Then came across your video and tried the fuses out, and boy did I get happy… Thank you for this! #lifesaver

My girl friend has a 2001 VW Beetle. Recently the AC stopped working. I googled how to charge the AC and this video came up. I’m glad it did because her car had the same problem. The 30 amp fuse on top of the battery all the way to the left under the cover was very corroded on one side. I had to pull it out with pliers. After I scraped it off and plugged it back it it works fine. Thank you very much for your post. It saved me tons of time.

Richard Downs says:

i have a 2003 gt tdi it’s blowing out cold it just not very much could mine just being running low im not to sure i only just bought it today lol sorry to be a pain

lildres123 says:

I have a 2000 jetta I changed the fuse and still not working.

Merrill Morris says:

Same thing happened on my 2002 — just a little melting of the plastic and a tiny bit of charring on one prong. It wasn’t obvious that the fuse was bad, and it even made the light on my fuse tester blink intermittently. It makes sense, because the AC had stopped then started working again twice, so the fuse was apparently working some of the time. I replaced the fuse just now, and all seems well. Thanks so much for this video, sam1174!

AndrewJohnsInc says:

Fantastic Sam, Same problem on my 2001 Beetle same setup with fuse looking just fine. Took it out scuffed it with a nail file and put it back and work great. Dealer wanted $85 to just look at it, and est. $1200 to fix! Thanks Sam .

MrPhil317 says:

Awesome job! This saved a lot of time and energy in figuring out what was wrong with my sons jetta. Had the same problem.

Elazar ben Yair says:

Thank you – saved a trip to the shop not to mention money.

Do It The Hard Way Sam says:

Lol! If I was doing things the easy way I would just sign the check! Lol. I like the how to vids, I tried being serious but that’s not easy, and find myself being more of a goofball. Keep up the good work. My kids say ” if your not doing it the hard way you not doing it right.”
