Oh man… That’s a million dollar question. If they are old, they get really brittle. A new/rebuilt MC should have new elbows. A fork style prying tool will work best. I’ve used a body panel clip removal tool before with good results. I’ve also broken a few of the elbows…

Cole Olson says:

What is the best way to remove the plastic elbows without destroying them?

gregmporter says:

Thanks for checking it out.

Jeff Klingler says:

GREAT video!!!…thank you!!

gregmporter says:

It was a 1981 quarter, so it was there before I bought the car… Someone had to stuff it in there, not an easy place for a quarter to fall into.

BelgianMuscle says:

Found money in your old frame. LMAO hahaha one of those “how the hell did that get there” moments

gregmporter says:

It’s tight in there for sure.

Cheator40 says:

Good swap Greg, not a lot of room to work on that master cylinder.

gregmporter says:

Pretty darn close. I bet you could swap them and never know.

TheWreckingYard . says:

Nice work Greg, looks like a very similar M/C to what’s in the 914.

gregmporter says:

Pretzel for sure. Good thing I can work by looking at the camera’s screen!

gregmporter says:

Yeah. You can bench bleed, but I think this works better for me. You can gravity bleed the lines too at the wheel cylinders, but that can take awhile.

gregmporter says:

No doubt Neill. Tight spaces, big hands, big tools… It seems like there should be an easier way.

gregmporter says:

Thanks Zig. The water trick is a new one for me… Good trick for sure.

ziggassedup says:

I pre bleed a master cylinder in the vice, then put some rubber bungs in the holes to stop the fluid from pouring out while I fit it to the car…Water will wash away any fluid that has been spilled..

ziggassedup says:

There is a kind of ratchet spanner with an open end…Not real good for anything done up real tight.

danelectro68 says:

fiddly, tight spaces…..they drive me insane!!

About time somebody invented an open ended ratchet spanner!!! maybe they have I don’t know!

Thanks for the video Greg 🙂

Laurie Harper says:

Nice trick with the gravity bleed, I’ll have to remember that one!

gregmporter says:

I didn’t know that. Good call man! Thanks.

gregmporter says:

Yeah. The flip, turn, flip is aggravating for sure.

gregmporter says:

Thanks man! These little repairs aren’t easy to do correctly, that’s for sure.

vw64manyrd says:

very nice! a bit of pretzel logic to get at it and video too! Thanks for the video!

SRVjediknight says:

wow ,, very good tutorial I can remember a few sware words in mine that I didnt publish Nark, nark Nark !!!!!!

SRVjediknight says:

nobody knows what we go thru but us customers are oblivious and dont care !!!!

Mike Mckay says:

I hate when you have to make small wrench movements

towrecker says:

always remember brake fluid is water soluble , flood any area where it hits paint with water , also when you rebuild wheel cylinders ect , the garden hose is all thats needed to clean them up lol

gregmporter says:

Thanks man!

Kronkus36 says:

Great video Greg !

gregmporter says:

Stopping like a dream. I agree. Americans know how to locate MCs. Germans made it cheap though.

gregmporter says:

LOL!!! Thanks man!

gregmporter says:

Stops pretty damn quick!

tomswonderfulworld says:

Hopefully she stops on a dime now!

lakesideranch says:

Working as hard as you do, you deserve some “good brakes” lol

Great video brother Greg !!

jevchance says:

Wow, as far as master cylinders go that is a huge pain. How’s she stopping now?

gregmporter says:

You know it CJ. Gotta get it done however you can. I like to bring my YT brothers along with me wherever I go.

gregmporter says:

HAHA… VW parts look different than Chevy parts for sure..
