Hey, thanks for making this! I have a question. Have you ever removed the
combi valve from the 1.8T engine that was also found in the Golf and Jetta
from this generation? My 2002 GTI is throwing the same P0411 code, and I’m
thinking the combi valve is the culprit as the SAI pump and other
components seem to work fine. I don’t have the same bracket going from the
head to the combi valve, and there are two hex bolts that look like they
might be a similar bracket but they are obstructed by a coolant hose. Is it
better to just try and wriggle the combi valve out by itself, or to take
the bracket? Like on the VR6, the 1.8T combi valve has its attachment bolts
coming up from the bottom.

got back into repairing my own cars again, taking an interest in the
electronic systems of how they work and how to troubleshoot them. Although,
my background is mainly in industrial maintenance, cars are really no
different in diagnosing them. It’s just a matter of understanding the
systems and from there you can devise your own methods to diagnose as you

After working at several companies as a maintenance guy, went back to
school for the second time and earned an ASEE. Got into control wiring of
automated equipment. Later, went back to school again for refrigeration and
did that for about four years. Went back to school again and got a BSEE and
today I’m an electronics/electrical engineer. In the past, I worked on my
own cars, but after a few years, decided to let others work on them. Got
tired of them screwing things up, misdiagnosing, cont…)

It has always seemed counterintuitive, that drawing in room temp air will
raise exhaust temperatures, but I guess I understand the accelerated
combustion idea. It’s too bad that it doesn’t improve fuel efficiency or
engine performance. That also is counterintuitive.

The fresh air drawn in when mixed with the exhaust gases will raise its
temperature. This is because the mixture is richer when the engine is cold,
and with more oxygen added it raises the temp which then helps to heat the
cat faster. Just amazing to me to go to all this trouble with vacuum,
valves, pump, etc. just to heat the cat faster. And still more amazing is
how American cars dropped the air pump 40 years ago, yet German engineering
still needs to use a smog pump. Yes, counterintuitive.
