Do you have a fix for a ticking sound while idling? or any ideas?

AgapeFit Mommy says:

Thank You… definitely can't purchase from VW. it's way outta pocket. last fix I went to pic n pull and the parts worked great…but this I know I won't take a chance doing that. I'll look at that website you posted. Thanks Again! Have A Blessed Day! Oh I just called a mechanic and they quoted me 250 for parts and labor. I think that might be a good deal. but You made it look so easy.. I have a friend who might be able to do it

Hello!! Great Post..! I have 2002 VW Golf and It looks exactly like yours under the hood. Today the car decided not to start. I got Jump and then it started. I have been noticing a grinding noise when I turn the car off and also this funny feeling I get while driving that something is spinning and something else isn't catching up?? I think that's the best way to explain it. So I liked up symptoms and starter problems came up. I changed alternator and Battery fuse box. And things worked fine. I think all original parts still. So Starter is old. With my car symptoms would you say I need a new one or could I just do what you did. I think I need a new one.??

Hello yourbeekeeper, I did exactly the same as you in your video, it was easy and really straight forward, but unfortuantely the fix lasted about two weeks, and now the noise is back. I´m thinking probably the grease I used was not "good" enough, I mean the quality of the grease, Im planning to re do the fix again, can you please tell me the exact type of grease you used?
Thanks, great video by the way.

I have a Fabia estate which makes the same noise so I've taken it out of the car to see if I could lube it up and try and restore it. However I've noticed it has a bit of a burnt smell coming from it, is that normal? Also I've been told as well that I could replace the bushes as well, is it worth it? I'm really unsure what to do at the moment. I'm far from a machanic I just like having a go. Anyone help? Cheers

Walter Salva says:

Do you know if this video work for VW new beetle 2000 Gls 2.0 ?.

Ken Dash says:

Great video! I did this today. Just so viewers know, there is a wiring loom (attached to bolt) which hides the top bolt. In addition, a cooling tube (oil?) bracket is bolted (nut) to the bottom bolt. Both nuts need to be removed (with 13mm socket I recall) before removing the main 18 mm bolts. Before trying this, purchase the 18mm deep socket and soak main bolts with PB Blaster . FYI, bottom nut (bracket) and bolt removal. and replacement, are better performed underneath. All of this can be performed while VW is on Jack-stands.

Maddy Starbuck says:

Why exactly does the starter make this noise?

BigTwinkiesGTO says:

Do you know if it's the same with a 1.8 T?

Karl Marques says:

Excellent video man. You saved me a few hundred bucks at the shop. This worked perfectly! Start up is quiet as a mouse now.

Frank Howard says:

My two daughters each have 2000 Jettas and my wife recently purchased a 2003, all equipped with the 2.0 and the 5-speed. The 2003 starter is silent but both of the 2000s have made this noise since they were purchased used, one 10 months ago and the other 6 years ago. Last night, I attempted to fix the one that was purchased 6 years ago. I followed your video exactly, except I removed the three gears and cover to wash off the old grease in gasoline before drying them and re-installing them applying a modest amount of high temperature wheel bearing grease. I made sure it got into every tooth and I slathered more on the ring gear teeth. I also made sure the grease was packed into the center of each of the three gears where the needle bearings are. When I re-installed the three gears on their spindels, a "worm" of new grease was pushed out the top of each one of them. Unfortunately, the noise remains. I'm beginning to think that the noise actually comes from the needle bearings in the three gears and as most of the grease was pushed out when I re-installed them. Perhaps I should have packed them better, making sure that the grease actually got into the needle bearings. Any suggestions before I try it again on the other 2000?

I have been searching forums for WEEKS (I'm serious) trying to pinpoint this noise in my Beetle. And telling people "It kind of squeals right after you start it" gets every type of response from "It's your water pump/belt/bearings/engine /your car is toast" Nobody would listen when I kept saying it's just a quick squeal!

and FINALLY! I found your video! You have no idea how happy I am you made this video! When you started the vehicle at the beginning, I practically screamed "THAT'S IT! THAT'S IT!!" (Then had to pull the video slider back lol)

Thank you so much for this video! I know how to fix this absolutely irritating problem now!
