Thanks, Nov 18/2013, just had a look at this and did the pass headlight
change, it was extremly simpl;e on a 2000 beetle, geadlight came out and
went back in prestty easy, as a note for others you may want to take a
pair of pliers and squeeze the wire connecter terminal a little tighter so
it has a better hold on your new bulb, mine was loose so it over heated the
wire a little and made the insulation a little brittle!, i just wrapped it
with electrical tape!

mike johnston says:

I wiggled it out. Took no time at all. I think it depends on what kind of
grime and stuff has collected on the tracks.

mike johnston says:

I went to VW dealer and they were going to charge 85$ and the guy told me
it was labor intensive. That’s a lie. I bought the bulb for 7$ and took 11
minutes to install. 1 minute to remove the light, and 10 minutes to fit it
back in properly, which is slightly more tricky. If I worked at the VW
dealership, it would take me 5 minutes for the entire job, and then I’d
pick my nose for the rest of the time.

mike johnston says:

That was on a 2002 Beetle. Easiest light change I’ve done in my life.

yes you are right it is a royal pain ,for once its is 90% in you are
working blind ,and yes a good smack with the palm of your hand worked for
me good video thanks

Seck Vlogs says:

The best way is to push lightly from the back with a tool, thats all I had
to do. Sucking it out can potentially scratch the lens, and pulling from
the front is difficult…

TheFix330i says:

DO NOT take out the air box. it is completely uncessary to remove and
wastes time. all you have to do is reach to the right side of the battery
and you will see the latch. Pull up and pull your headlight out. faster
than pumping gas. Great DIY thanks for sharing

Good Video, help me a lot

Chippychap says:

Thank you for showing me how.

Buck Rogers says:

Thanks for the video. A helpful tip, is to move very S-L-O-W-L-Y when doing
video…slower than you think. It makes for a more enjoyable experience for
the viewer…

agentry880 says:

Great video and thanks. Also it is a pain to get the haedlight back in.
However it did save the cost of going to a Dealer. Thanks Again

Lee-ann Harder says:

I didn’t take out my air box it’s easy to break the latch so use tools.

Bassam A says:

I pulled the lever up (after pushing in the locking square/mechanism),
headlight is sticking out about 1/4 inch, I am able to get both my hands
around the light and I’m pulling as hard as I can, but it won’t
release/come out. Should I pull harder or am I missing something. I would
have for this DIY to be more expensive then it has to be. Thanks in
advance.

jensen chase says:

It’s way to difficult to pull the headlight out by hand. My local mechanic
showed me a trick, use a basic toilet plunger, and suck the headlight out.
It sounds retarded, but it works, and makes it an easy job.

mickey koppenhaver says:

thanks for the video ………helped alot!

Dodgestruction says:

That is correct. I was unsure at the start of the video, but it is
unnecessary to remove. Mine was loose and it made for a better video with
it removed. I did the passenger side about a month later and it was MUCH
easier. It was not full of dirt like the video. I only took about 5 minutes.

Thanks cowboy!

This video is very helpful, thanks for posting. I just changed the
headlight bulb on a 1999 model. The plastic parts were brittle and the
locking lever had been broken by previous owner. I was able to get the unit
out but getting it back in was tough because there was no way to rotate the
locking collar, even after cleaning and lubing. I finally removed the inner
locking collar altogether and shoved the assembly into position. There
seems to be enough friction to hold it in place.
