i have the bolt thing done on my vw and it makes it super easy i replace my
alternator in one afternoon and it was my fist time highly recommend doing
that to your case.

Aussiebug63 says:

I had to remove the generator from my stock ’63 bug today and followed the
instructions from the John Muir book, Only took about 15 mins and only had
to remove the carb and this was without removing the engine, decklid,
manifold or fan housing ect..

Keith Gaines says:

I had a garage replace my generator this week. They charged like 250.00
which I thought was really expensive but maybe it wasnt if he had to pull
the motor…..

MrMagellan says:

Interesting Idea about the studs/bolts. It may also be possible to tighten
another nut down onto the existing nut and use that to turn the stud out.
May I also ask how the fan assembly is attached to the alternator- Is there
a bolt holding it in or does it slide in place?

mike schiffel says:

to remove a generator on the1600 DP engine, do you have to remove the
intake manifold first?…can the fan shroud be taken out with the engine in
the car?

eyeburn1 says:

How about just using a flat head screwdriver to lock the generator pulley
and loosening the fan nut since your replacing the gen. anyways.

loveanianimeme says:

@brighteyefilms But it would work for my to get a generator and stand from
a 68 bug and put it in? and i’ve heard that you can use a 6V starter even
if you have a 12V car for quite some time, and isn’t very hard to fit a 12V
starter cause you need to file a bunch of stuff down and what not to make
it fit?

skinnyveganboy says:

thank you so so so so so much, all i want to do is get to the bottom brush
easier and I was wondering what was so hard about taking the generator out
but i didn’t know the bolt would hinder it from being raised high enough to
easily remove it. you saved me hours of trying JUST to install the bottom
brush. BTW any good tip for replacing brushes?

mick forrest says:

Pull the decklid off. Then you can pull the whole fan shroud up and out
with the gen attached. An hour job.

neven01 says:

OK In the process now of removing my gen for replacement. I know you like
to go stock as much as possible 6d4vdub gives a walk though and suggests
removing the Carb (he tapes over it to prevent dirt etc. from falling in)
and removes the dist cap then holding shaft still w/ screwdriver in pully
slot he breaks the fan nut loose and removes that and the washers/shims,
then comes the clamp @oil filler spout/ gen. mount finally the four shroud
plate? screws. Chris thnx for all your Videos.

kc28 says:

@brighteyefilms thanks ,mate..i have a AS41 case..and now im using a
1285cc..engine num has been erase n reprinted..in malaysia it illegal..

Timm Eubanks says:

Thanks Chris! I am replacing those studs with bolts.

kc28 says:

is that the original vw engine num print?

irishchristopher1970 says:

I agree that pulling the engine is so much easier.30 minutes tops for a
stock engine.Plus you can check your clutch and end play while its out.Nice
idea though, especially if you have dual carbs and no manifold in the way.

Gary Biggs says:

Don’t forget to replace the generator stand/casing gasket. This is also
your oil filler inlet too, and you don’t want it to leak either.

Sean White says:

Its says “how to.” There was no demonstartion, just talk

Frederick Bock says:

So the 1600 engine mates to that old transaxle?

MrMechretired says:

i removed the whole top of my motor (before pulling it) The trick is the
intake. (it must come off) the 4 intake nuts (hard) and the 4 heat riser
tubes,(super hard) but on mine (like new) there are 16 screws on the rear
tin alone that i had to remove just to remove the tin, the rear bib tin. I
take it off for all motor pulls anyway. It can be done, but is tricky. my
post shows how. I put F.A.G or Timken bearing in my gen. , you dont want
cooling to fail. and a Gates belt.

freedomorelse says:

you can also try putting enough of the stud sticking up to put two 13mm
nuts on each stud, then just turning the bottom one to remove the
stud…that is if you don’t have four extra bolts.

loveanianimeme says:

Hey Chris, i want to change my 64 bug to a 12V system, will newer parts
like from a 68 beetle work on my car, like a generator and all the other
parts i need to change

MrMechretired says:

The best vids. you can pull the fan housing and gen , in car. The problem
is the interlinking of parts. I just did mine a 68 , stock T1. the trick is
the intake manifold , it is hard to remove. I also removed my engine hatch
(Utube that for put back ,tricks) the Intake bolt on the rear left is the
bugger. (on mine i have 2 nuts welded together to make this easy, (6mm) so
, OFF the , carb,Disty, gen strap. ,intake MAN, genstand, then fan housing
(2 screws L&R) Once all loose its obvious.

herbienbrian says:

nice tip ,is that the 1600?

MrMechretired says:

sure, the fan gen assy. has 4 screws holding it , it to the fan housing.
the fan has a fan hub/nut, and that holds the fan to the gen shaft. The
Bentleys book, is the correct book to by , there are other details. like
setting he fan gap to .080″ with shims,,,, details, RTM. and learn.

loveanianimeme says:

@brighteyefilms basically because 1 i can get a jump start from another car
if i ever get stuck somewhere. 2, i can get lights WAY easier, cause i
pretty much have to buy light bulbs online cause nowhere eles has them, and
3, i can have a modern stereo in the car, But know i’m just thinking about
swapping out engines entierly to a 68 or something like that, cause then i
have a bigger engine and i don’t need to change out everything on it.
