The question of when to replace Toyota and Lexus timing chains is a question I get asked all the time.

In this video I’ll share with you the exact criteria of when to consider replacing it and why. We have a 2010 Toyota RAV4 that is getting it’s timing chain replaced and it does have one that requires replacement.

Hello I have a 2ZZ-GE (1,8L 192cv) and i suspect the chain tensioner because Sometimes during a cold start it makes a shrill sound for 1s and I don't think it's the starter.

Phyuck Yew says:

Shoot, I thought changing your oil on time would prevent a car from needing it's chain replaced.

Great content please keep it coming!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Such a good and very helpful information, now thank you car Hamed hoy I didn’t ruined your name

Ahmad Ghosheh says:

Yup, I tried the short cut procedure using Toyota factoy steps. I had to go back and do the chain, guides, tensioner. It wasn't worth the extra trouble. Should have done it the first time.

soundman447 says:

As someone who has owned the greatest Toyota gas 4 cylinder of all time then 22R-E yes you can wear a Toyota timing chain out and guides do wear out as I have had it happen. In the case of the 22R-E it will eat the front cover.

stratfanstl says:

Dang. Wish I had seen this video back in April. Had the timing chain replaced in my 2007 Highlander Hybrid (at my request, thinking it was "due") at 103,000 miles. The Toyota dealer (no local import shops want to work on hybrids now, even 20 years after they became mainstream) didn't caution me it might be unnecessary.

Tom Jelinek says:

Timely topic, since the Car Wizard just yesterday insisted you have to examine and maybe replace the timing chain after 100,000 miles, maybe at 150K at the latest. But he didn't think to add, "except if it's a Toyota."

My thought is when you have to replace the gasket for the timing cover to fix an oil leak, that's when you inspect everything.

Dan Mulreany says:

Does the 2023 Prius Hybrid and the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid have a chain??

David Walker says:

As an engine machinist of 30 years, I can assure you Toyota timing chains are almost worry free. The only thing that really kills one, is improper maintenance. The old 22R and 22RE timing chains would go well over 250,000 of bad maintenance before failure.
