When Should You Replace Toyota Struts and Shocks? And How to Do It!

When Should You Replace Toyota Struts and Shocks? And How to Do It!

A Toyota Specialist shares when should you replace your Toyota Struts and Shocks.

I see so many shops recommending Toyota struts to be replaced around 50k miles without a reason. This is incorrect. You only replace your struts when there’s a big enough leak or you have a concern.

In this video I will share with you the entire process of replacing a strut on Toyota and Lexus cars.

Hope this helps one of you.

That gorgeous eighties white Supra in the background! Man, would I love to own THAT!

Richard Reiter says:

Wish we had the spring compressor like you have 60 years ago. Had to replace to the big springs in the Army tanks big guns. The springs was 12 in diameter and 6 foot 6 inches tall expanded.

Mohamed Rashid Joosub says:

Hello how are you
I have 1 question what if a strut is not so bad on leakage can we replace both stuts to avoid any other problems on struts From Mohammed from South Africa thank you.

MDman M says:

Yessir,,,, I has original 94 corolla have not change front struts yet.I guess should be similar to this,,, many thanks for the educational vid..

v g says:

What to do when struts are “not available” from Toyota? KYB, Monroe, Sachs? 2014 Venza AWD w/3.5

Sandbag1300 says:

Last year, I replaced all of the struts and rear strut mounts in my 2005 Camry 6 cylinder XLE with OEM parts at 120,000 miles because of age. Job went very smoothly. It was $1,300 for the parts, tool rental, and alignment. I rented the spring compressor at an Autozone store. Three of the four old struts would not rebound with the spring off. The fourth strut rebounded very slowly. That rebound action confirmed that it was time to change the struts.

Beast says:

Replace when it falls off.

xgetbackupx says:

I usually use the weight of the car to unbolt the spring. Jack it up underneath the strut to compress unbolt then slowly release. Then reverse to put it back

hlq2action says:

23:11 I read and seen that it is strongly not recommended to use an impact wrench to tighten the strut top nut, it could damage the piston seals. What do you think?

Gerald Cady II says:

Thoughts on using a "loaded" strut? For an untrained DYI without all of the special tools or professional shop time/labor disassembling and reassembling correctly vs using the loaded strut option. If it were me and I had to do the work, I would go with the loaded strut if available since I don't have the good tools to compress the spring and work on the strut.

Ahnaf Zahid says:

i was expecting part 2 of the wiring series

Jose Ramon Esperanza says:

Why wait till it leaks? Is there no digital suspension tester for this?

J Grant says:

Hi, probably the best video I have seen on strut change. I live in Northern Scotland, where we have very well salted roads in winter. Rust is always a problem on cars once they get to about six years old. For sway bar links, I always soak the nuts 2- 3 days before trying to remove them. I always use a good quality key, after clearing out the socket fitting, combined with a six point ring spanner. It is a pleasure to see a true professional at work. Keep the videos coming!

Bradley Howe says:

With all due respect, I don't wait till a strut is blown to replace it. Anytime I can tell there is dampening degradation, and even a non leaking strut isn't properly controlling motion anymore, I replace them.

A non leaking strut can be worn out internally and allowing too much uncontrolled suspension movement, which can be dangerous and lead to loss of vehicle stability and potentially loss of control.

Spanky Ham says:

That strut spring compressor sure does beat the rod style ones. Makes this work cake.

Jerb Sherb says:

I remember I replaced my struts on my maxima back in the day and forgot to do wheel alignment on it. I would say to avoid driving it until you do a wheel alignment on it.

Paul Robinson says:

Taking the spring off! I've seen when it all goes wrong and the spring went through a double skinned brick wall!!!!!

Alan Sidak says:

My Prius mechanic did an excellent job replacing all struts on my gen 3. Now I can see that. Thank you!

Wes Fields says:

Very timely, Amd. I just found out yesterday I need struts on my toyota. Been searching to replace the strut and not do the quickies only because you encouraged me to do it right for ride quality. May the Lord keep you sir

Vin Yu says:

Hi car care nut. A big fan of your videos. Have you heard of the good news my friend? The rav4 hybrid and venza 2023 cable gate (MGR) corrosion issue is already fixed. In here they changed the bolts and connector to the motor to be aluminum and stainless.

aldo massa says:

Brilliant as always AMD
THANKS !

and says:

I wish I can download all the information in your head to my head.

Randy Duncan says:

I've been waiting to see that pro spring compressor. Very cool. Few things make me nervous but HF spring compressors do. Am I too OCD for putting the torque wrench on all of those nuts? Thanks for another great video.
