There is an enormous market for plain jane reliable fuel efficient automobiles that last for years. The kind that made Toyota famous. I'm pretty sure if they brought back the basics and stuck with them, they will be able to rival electric vehicles. People prefer the Japanese made Toyota as much as the German made Volkswagen

Have owned a standard 1985 Candy LE and a company car 2008 Camry Hybrid. 1985 had a glow like plug go out and stopped running within 1st year. Drove a rental a couple of months until they could figure out the issue, have under 3000 miles on it! After that it remained in our family aka parents took it and drove it well into 2004 with few issues! My 2008 Hybrid was fast and awesome gas mileage, only issue was I would park and idle as preparing for another clinic call(worked for big Pharma 45 years}, get out and come back 2 hours later and it would be running! The engine would shut off parked and a/c still ran off battery, it was a human error not a manufacturing issue. Have owned 3 Toyota Highlanders, all never in shop for any issues until my 2021 Highlander Limited AWD. We have a rattle under center row left passenger seat that the dealer couldn’t resolve! My daughter has the same model with the same rattle! I finally fixed by stuffing a rag between hard plastic and seat cushion on both, rattle fixed! Only reason I got rid of my 2015 Highlander Limited AWD was Apple Car play!!

BTW, Toyota will have to re-look into their marketing strategies as Chinese brands are catching up and take Toyota markets shares.
