Hi Caleb, Good video!

I used Norm’s kit for the on a 2003 4cyl Camry. Now I am putting back the engine together and have 2 questions:

– before putting the cylinder head back, I put cylinder head #1 in top position: how do I know if I am on the exhaust stroke or compression stroke (TDC)?

– also, I have 3 marks on the exhaust camshaft sprocket: a dot with an “I” next to it, a dot with an “E” next to it and a dash. Which mark should I use to align the chain?

Thanks a lot!

Sebastien

Caleb Warren says:

It took about a week, working on it after work each day. Probably 3 days of work if you don’t end up with any problems. The check engine light was a catalyst deficiency below threshold or some O2 sensor thing, probably something to do w/ rebuilding it or timing issues. Cleared code & it hasn’t come back since. Car had 104k miles on in when we got it, now it has 130K miles, still running great!

I am intending to do this repair for my wife’s 04 camry. I had 2 questions for you. one, how long did the whole process take in your experience? and at the end you mentioned there was a check engine light on in the car, was that easy to clear, or was there another small repair associated with the check engine light?

I can’t thank you enough for posting this video. The shop said “Blown Head Gasket” but the gasket was in good condition when I removed the head. I think the only issue was the stripped threads on the back head bolts. Easily repaired with the NS300L kit.

Rickster5176 says:

The correct tool for removing the head bolts is Snap-on part# SADM10E . Like Caleb said – DO NOT use a 12 point triple square (like you will find at the auto parts store.) This is a specialty tool and although it has 12 points the geometry of the points is different from a 12 point triple square. Use ONLY the Bi-Hexagon 12 point above. You can also buy them from Toyota. Much cheaper than a set of Easy Outs.

Hey, where are you located? I have a Scion Tc with the same motor that needs the same repair… Would you be interested in doing mine for a fee? I live in Eastern NC… 🙂

Angel Saravia says:

Did you pry it off or how did you accomplish that

Angel Saravia says:

I’m still having trouble pulling the motor head off

Angel Saravia says:

I’ve got a 2003 camry with the same problem, I just finished extracting the head bolt with a similar ez out, but I

James Hoffa says:

Would you sell me the kit to repair the head holts for a 2.4L toyota?

Orlando Simmons says:

Great video & very detailed.Thank You for posting this. Now, I have a 02 Camry with same engine with coolant loss that’s leaking from the head @ the intake manifold gasket. Dealer & another shop say it’s a blown HG.1.how long did it actually take you to complete this job? I was told by a shop & not the dealer that it would take 11 hours cause its a big job. Is that accurate? 2.would you recommend a novice DIY’er like myself to tackle this job or for me to let a shop do it?

tantrictoa says:

Very nice video and outstanding work. The information and tips you give can save a guy hours of work. You were not afraid to show your mistakes either(especially in the timing section); which really are not mistakes but a learning experience since you got it right. God bless you and your family and hopefully you get 300,000 more miles from that Camry.

strickmans says:

overall how is the toyota engine perform? is it a reliable car?

Sefa O'Reilly says:

Caleb, thanks for your video. just finished the job and would not have been able to do it without your video. I bought the kit NS300L from Norm Huhn and it worked perfectly. thanks!!

IdahoLindy says:

Fantastic video! Looking to pick up a low mileage ’05 Rav and heard of this problem. This video answered all my questions. Thanks!!

Kelvin Feliciano says:

Paul Batchelor says:

Great vid !!!!!!! Warren….!!!!!

Kelvin Feliciano says:

My girlfriend has a Highlander with the same engine and is been taken completely by another mechanic who stripped a lot of those bolts. what brand and model number are those easy out ?? I am going to need those.

Kelvin Feliciano says:

I gotta say this is the best video I seen on you tube. Great work and great explanation. Glad to know there still good mechanics out there.

alainansul says:

How long are the insert? Does it still run well?

Hanz Alexander says:

wish you can fix mine …..

joseph kopeczy says:

my neace car did the same thing the deal want a arm and a leg to fixs it the car is under a recall toyota not the best car any more they lost it big time i not buy the car unless there was a life time warrenty on the head bolts and no problem with the electric gas pedal i ask them not to use the electronic gas pedal because of electrical shorts ever happen

joseph kopeczy says:

its shame they dont have a face book site

PeterGriffin4200 says:

Glad to hear that. I have bought my 02 Camry with 99,000 and now it has 131,000 miles runs excellent. I did have to replace the starter around 120K and normal tires and brakes. Our other family car is a 94 Camry V6 with 325,000 miles so the 02 should reach that milestone since I maintain it well.

YotaFan1 says:

Calm down man. I have an 02 camry with 207,000 and I have not seen that issue. As a matter of fact all I have replaced is a belt tensioner and motor mount since new. Aside from brakes and tires. Its been a great car

PeterGriffin4200 says:

How many miles on the 06 Camry when this happened?

I am asking because I have got a 2002 Toyota Camry with the 4cyl (2az-fe) engine with 130,000 miles and it runs perfect without any issues. Do you think I will have this issue considering the mileage?

Jonathan Soto says:

Hey Caleb, what brand are those easy-outs? Where can i get a set. Great video by the way, i came across it by searching a tap and die set, watched the whole thing and i don’t even have a Toyota, lol.

arikszjf says:

Nice vid man where can I get that kit at??

STIZEN9 says:

I cannot get the motor high enough to slip that timing cover bolt through the ps pulley. I have removed the pass side motor mount and even have the front motor mount disconnected. Something is stopping me from going that high up and Im nervous but I think if i keep pumpin the jack itll deatroy something. Is it supposed to have resistance when jacking up motor?

STIZEN9 says:

Caleb please help I need to talk to you about this repair I need help my number is 928 515 9022 Ill be waiting for your call and working on my camry thanks

DebtFreeCars says:

Did you have to file down the opening to each hole you threaded? Was the opening of each hole smooth enough for the head gasket to seal properly? What would you say was the hardest part of this fix?

DebtFreeCars says:

Great Video! I’m sure NS300L people would love to hear from you.

How long has this engine been running? Is the head bolts holding on well? Any enginer problems after completing this repair? did you change any other parts besides the head gasket?

TVG8487 says:

Great vid Caleb!!! Thought my cousins engine was trash until I saw your vid. I had my cousin purchase the NS300L from Norm. I do have a question for you. How did u keep the thread lock from setting up too quickly? Thanks
