Modogish says:

How did you get the steering gear off the intermediate shaft? I have
removed the bolt on the shaft but does not seem like it can be removed.
Did you remove the rack and pinion steering gear from the left or right
side of the car? Did you have to remove or loosen the nut inside the car
itself? Any help is great.

Eddiezales says:

Thanks Brian now I can switch out my pump, I’m not going in blind.

mrjost55 says:

@briansmobile1 oh and if I do replace the pump, is it a good idea to
replace any washers or hoses as well? My car has 175k miles and it’s 13
years old (1998)

briansmobile1 says:

@Dicofole It just depends on what’s available. I do use quite of bit of
Atsco reman units…. sometimes because I don’t have a lot of options. I
have 10-12% of them fail right out of the box.

estebanh33 says:

Great insight information. Thanks!

donkeylong88 says:

@briansmobile1 do you know how to replace the washer fluid pump for the
avalon or where its located??

mrjost55 says:

Hey do you need any special tools or an air gun for this job? I’m wondering
if I should do it myself or let a mechanic do all the work.

TunedCavityLasers says:

I have a 97 and am not sure what is causing my issue, the pump or the rack.
I have a slow leak I cannot find the source. I dont want to pull the rack
if the pump is the problem etc. What happening is the steering goes stiff
then lose while turning the wheel. This happens every inch or so going
stiff to lose through the travel of the steering wheel. Any idea what I
should look at first? I know its either part, but am looking for an idea
what to start with.

richard crank says:

I have a 09 camry that started getting hard to steer when going slow, it
has fluid and belt is good. But when turning in tight radius the tires make
noise, i was wondering if the pressure senser you mentioned could go bad?

envision6 says:

One more question, does sensor have to be screwed off with open end wrench?

briansmobile1 says:

@jlaw21652 You’re welcome. Thank YOU for the gratitude and specific
feedback.

S Man says:

I have a 97 Lexus ES300! I cannot get to the 2nd bolt on top. How did you
get that 2nd bolt out? I tried to remove the nut off the pulley and can’t
do it manually and starting to strip the nut holding the pulley. Once I get
the pulley out! I can get the 2nd bolt. Please advise how you did it? At
this point I just want to see if there is a way to get the whole pump out
and then take the pulley out afterward.

envision6 says:

Thanks will be doing this next weekend. The line and sensor on top look
like a pain to get to. Did you use a crow bar or something to tension belt
when reinstalling?

mrjost55 says:

@briansmobile1 so I don’t need a special pulley tool like it says in the
manual? Well actually, I think I’ll remove the pump from the car and will
bring it over to a mechanic if I won’t be able to remove the pulley by
myself. Thanks for this video btw, I have a 98 ES300 and it’s exactly the
same.

jlaw21652 says:

Y Thanks for the help.our video was very helpful, especially the portion
dealing with removal of the high pressure line. Not a pleasant job in any
case.

briansmobile1 says:

@distrongker I spray it with penetrating oil, remove the nut, spray it
again, and then wiggle it back and forth while applying pressure away from
the pump. look at 5:50

briansmobile1 says:

@donkeylong88 As many locations that squirt there is a pump- front, back,
headlights, etc.

Curt Simshauser says:

Thanks!!

PeterGriffin4200 says:

But is that normal for it to do that? That noise and smell didn’t show up
anytime later. I inspected all the belts and everything seems ok.

IamRagnas says:

so to get the powersteering drive belt you only had to take out that one
bolt? or did you have to lossen the pivot bolt?

briansmobile1 says:

@donkeylong88 Yes. It’s at the bottom of the washer tank. I believe you get
to it through the wheel well plastic. It just unplugs from the line and the
wires. Then you can pull it (unsnaps) from the tank itself.

Eric Dee says:

How much would a guy such as yourself charge to do such a job? Toyota
dealership quoted $1100 just to replace 2 hoses that they said were
leaking. Seems outrageously high considering I can get the: high pressure
and the return and a “to gear” hose ( 3 total ) for $175 from parts store.
The pump is working fine. Then some fluid..How much are they charging me
for labor do you think? $900? Car has 100K miles 99 XLS – Thanks!

briansmobile1 says:

@IamRagnas You’d just have to loosen the pivot and the slide bolts to get
the belt on/off.

Gary Calliham says:

Great Video THANK YOU VERY MUCH for putting this on you tube. I am
replaceing a power steering pump on a solara and it is set up exactly the
same!! THANKS!!!

briansmobile1 says:

@gz28 You’re welcome

distrongker says:

how did you take the pulley off?

donkeylong88 says:

@briansmobile1 is there two pumps one for headlights aswell?

jerry b says:

great video….thank you.

BeccaJernigan26 says:

awesome, very helpful of course i watched it more then once since I was
changing my rack and pinion by my lonesome but thanks!!!!! very helpful

briansmobile1 says:

I just rotate the pulley and pull the bolt out through the pulley. I
generally don’t take the pulley off but if I do, I use a 6 point socket and
an impact gun. These are generally right hand threaded.

briansmobile1 says:

Put some local miles on it and sign up for AAA. Otherwise replace the pump.

briansmobile1 says:

@lboi87 Good to hear

briansmobile1 says:

No that is NOT normal. The vanes in the PS pump must have jammed due to
contaminants in the system.

Dicofole says:

Do you always buy a brand new replacement pump or you would also use a
reman pump ?
