The 2023 Toyota Sienna Is Good But It Has One FATAL Flaw!

We take a look at the 2023 Toyota Sienna Hybrid which in my opinion is the best version of the Sienna minivan ever! However in 2023 it does have one fatal flaw that could shy a lot of people from buying one.

In this video we do a thorough review of the 2023 Toyota Sienna. We talk about some of it’s technical specifications.

Then we look at the inside, outside, then we address some common issues and how they’ve progressed and finally we address one fatal flaw that’s affecting the sienna in 2023.

Greetings AMD. Many thanks for another brilliant video. I am continually aware of your God given amazing ability to store all of the technical information in your head and the way in which you present it to us.I hope that you have had a good Easter with your family.

30:49 A week ago I did an oil change on my 2016 Prius Four Touring. At the time of the oil change my car had 49,527 miles. I lived in Kaua‘i, Hawaiʻi which is why I have very low mileage, but a year ago I moved to Nevada. Driving the Prius in Nevada was a different driving experience than driving it in Hawaiʻi, and I think it’s due to the higher elevation and higher speed limits. The engine would drone so loud, and it didn’t feel as peppy as in Hawaiʻi. My MPGs went down. In Hawaiʻi, I used to average about 54 MPG, but now I’m at 49 MPG. In Nevada, I used Power Mode every day just because of the higher speed limits and to keep up with traffic. I also used Power Mode in Hawaiʻi a lot but would feather the gas pedal.

I’ve serviced my Prius only at Toyota stealerships, until, last week I finally did it myself because it’s way cheaper. I used the recommended oil weight, Royal Purple 0W, 20 synthetic oil, and all I can say is WOW! The car drives so much more smoother, the loud droning sound is gone because the engine has way less friction. I’ve noticed on the freeway, the Prius acceleration bar on the screen stays closer to the “Eco” mark even at 80 mph and while going up a slight incline. I’ve noticed my engine is quieter on my everyday routes driving north on the 215 and 515 freeways. Usually, my engine would be screaming in the red Power section of the acceleration bar to stay up to speed. Now, the car feels more powerful and responsive. I feel more confident when it comes to passing cars. I can accelerate quickly without going deep into the red power band. Even my friend noticed my car drives differently as he hates riding in the Prius because of the loud engine noise on top of the road noise from my Michelin CrossClimate tires.

I believe (or supposedly) Toyota uses Mobile1 oil, but from now on, I’ll be using Royal Purple. I’m also considering Amsoil. I can’t wait to see how much more gas I’ll be saving. My local Walmart had the five-liter Royal Purple on sale for $37, and they also had the Toyota brand oil filter for $7. Usually, the five-liter oil is $50 something.

I honestly feel that Royal Purple brings out the true performance of the hybrid drivetrain, especially with the eCVT. I feel an improved linear acceleration with Royal Purple, higher passing confidence, and a more pleasant driving experience.

We looked over the Sienna & saw so many flaws, many of which you mentioned, & the price shock made us literally sick. No way in hell would we stoop so low to waste good $ on this plastic can. We'll keep our 160k miles 2002 Sienna & look elsewhere for a hybrid, plug in or a Testla. Our neighbors have a 2022 Sienna & Toyota didn't cover the problem with the middle seats. Plus they're worried the back/door bumper & motors will sting them with more stress. We get 20mpg, & $40k for gas will go well beyond our Graves without the new Toyota stress.

Anne D says:

We went to Maplewood Toyota in MN and waited 9 mo for AWD, switched to the silver 25th anniversary edition and took ownership last month…would probably still be waiting for the one we actually wanted….but happy to have something and no markup!

Scott Sluggos Rule! says:

Toyota fan most my life… this is a dog pile… water in the oil… just lazy crappy engineering. Please Toyota get back to smart reliable and economical engines. Oh I will save on gas…all lost $ when you have to do extra oil changes and if you don’t… sell a kidney

"Rock On" says:

After putting my head up from this detailed video. I realized. It's not the end of world. Pufff.

DT D says:

Honda Odyssey has much better interior design than Sienna.
– Better 3rd row fold down and seating space
– Way better 2nd row bench seat that has good middle seat
– Interior material feel better

I own both of the van from previous generation.

Octavio Fuentes says:

I love to have a sienna

DakotaDave17 says:

We just took delivery of our 23 XSE sienna. Dealer did no markup of any kind. Of course we paid msrp but I’m not going to complain about that nowadays. We waited just shy of 13 months for this van. We put money down on one in march of 22…we just got it now in April of 23. I don’t know why it takes so long.

He maccabe says:

Looks like a cat bus to me.

pingsiong chua says:

10 months wait time to get a mini van is not that bad, here in Toronto the wait time is between 18 to 24 months. I placed my order in March 2020 with down payment. the dealer called me 2 times and informed me I may get the van in February 2024…. cross my fingers…

DigiTiLMon says:

I put down a deposit to order a Sienna in Canada 13 months ago. I was told at the time 8-12 months for delivery. This week I was told could be up to 22 more months. Perhaps I’ll get a refreshed 2025? Kids might be moved out before I get delivery?

Chris says:

The lack of lay-flat 3rd row and lack of 2nd row removable seats, the horrendous front-grill that Toyota seems to love, and the MSRP+ price tag makes this a no-go for me. Too bad, I love our 2009 Sienna today and paid just $24000. But wife wants a new MV. It won't be Toyota this go-round. I also had a 2006 Toyota RAV with a very cheap fit/finish feel, and remember that vividly. I refuse to have a repeat experience for $50+ K. For the price of a loaded Toyota Sienna today, you can get a luxury model SUV that seats 7.

William McIntosh says:

Thanks for this video. I had the condensation problem with my 2014 Prius and had to replace the engine…..at least that's what my mechanic suggested thinking that the head must be warped. 100% due to a quick start up and shut down in a snow storm. People need to watch out for the condensation issue with these Toyota Hybrid engines!! I always let the motor completely warm up now, even when just moving the vehicle.

Marc Andratschke says:

"Best Sienna Ever" "Massive impovement", I have to disagree. America Toyota's are slowly getting worse, and worse. My 1995 Previa with 450K Miles is a world above my 2005 Sienna and comparing the 2005 to the 2023, fit and finish on the 2005 is 100% better. It's making me look at all the other options before going back to anything Toyota made in North America. Just doesn't seem to be much difference in quality anymore. Even the new Tundra vs the older ones. I hate to say it but the new Tundra is out classed by the F150. Just don't understand what Toyota NA is thinking….
