How To Replace The Front Struts On A 2006 Toyota 4runner Limited 2wd NON X-REAS Suspension

Toyota 4Runner Front Strut Replacement Cost

Most dealers charge around six to $800 to replace the front struts on the 2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited 2WD. However that’s using OEM parts, which are Artie failing with the front end sag since the spring rate in the front is too soft. You can get these aftermarket KYB replacement struts for less than $250 for both the left and the right front. This comes with the entire strut assembly for the 4Runner, including a brand-new spring, shock, mounting plate, rubber bushing, and even brand new nuts to mount the top of the assembly to the strut tower in case your old ones are corroded.

This unit comes completely preassembled, and you don’t have to fool with a spring tensioner or assembling the shock to the mounting kit… It’s all done for you. Like I mentioned before in the video, it’s the same amount of work to replace the spring by itself, and not much more expensive to buy the whole unit.

This video shows how to replace the front struts on 2006 Toyota four Runner 2wd Limited model. I chose to go with aftermarket KYB complete replacement struts, since is the same amount of work to replace either the spring or the shock independently of each other. The ride quality is much improved with the KYB’s, and they were also less expensive than in the genuine OEM Toyota replacements.

The other is not decided to go with the KYB’s, is they have a slightly different spring rate, which will help with the front and sagging and improve ride quality over brick roads and washboard bumps. Now they’re installing I’ve been driving the truck for a few weeks, the front end is much tighter and it handles much better. The front inside that plagues a lot of limited models that come with a lighter spring in the front, has been completely reversed with the new KYB’s, and even raise the front end about an inch and a half when measuring from the ground to the top of the fender well.

I would highly recommend the KYB struts to anyone looking to replace their shocks or springs on the 4runner, and I bought mine from Amazon after having a bad experience ordering from auto anything.

Here are the struts I bought:

LilBun LPS says:

Wow you need some nails for that hammer lol

LilBun LPS says:

No need to use that tool due to might damage the boot. Hammer the eyelet and it will drop.

CAPB says:

Does anyone know where to put oil for the struts. I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that I am replacing the Shocks. This one has Oil. I cannot locate where to put the oil for the Shocks. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks.

RoadTripVidz says:

Just completed the job.. YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE OFF THE TIE ROD. Just the 3 lower control bolts loosened and you're good. Use a racheting strap to hold up the LCA with a jack below it for fine tuning to line things up as needed. Tie Rod created no tension at all. Literally can change out a strut in 10 minutes once the tire is off.

RoadTripVidz says:

How long did each side take you to do?

Josh L says:

Agree with twistedwedge12, there is no need to disconnect the tie rod, or the lower control arm spindle at all. But on my '06 SR5 4WD I did have to remove the LCA cams and bolts which allowed me to swing the LCA away completely. I also removed the sway bar, not to replace the struts but because the sway bar bushings have been known to deteriorate and cause noise so I proactively took care of them since the suspension was opened up anyway. I was able to remove the stock struts by just loosening them but the Monroe Quick Struts have a wider spring diameter and wouldn't fit through the small opening. You will need to jack/pry the LCA to align the holes to reinstall the cams. I used a long two by 4 and a 4×4 as a fulcrum for this part. You definitely need an alignment done after this job.

Thomas Vrnak says:

How much different would this be on a 4 wheel drive? thanks

George says:

Nice work. Did these struts have sport suspension? I guess this is the type that has oil hose pumped into the strut. I have a 2005 limited V8 and I have this type. Can we replace the sport suspension with the regular strut?

twistedwedge12 says:

Disconnection of the tie rod is unnecessary…. loosen both lower control arm bolts (they control alignment and will be necessary to have truck aligned afterward), swing the LCA down and once the lower strut bolt is loose the strut assembly will fall out the bottom. I replaced mine with monroe quick struts in a matter of hours.

SaucyChickenNuggets says:

Do you have a video showing replacing the rear shocks on 2006 4Runner?

Rey Torres says:

How is the ride on KYB pre-built strut? Did you replaced the rear shocks with KYB also? Is KYB better than OEM Toyota Tokico? I replaced mine with prebuilt Monroe Struts and rear shocks about 15k miles now. I only see a little improvement though.

Matthew McKenna says:

great video guys. I like the detailed explanation. .

Trey Ware says:

take the skid plat off too. great vid though guys

Trey Ware says:

Great video, do you have to separate the Tie Rods? the spindle shouldnt move.

Jeff Dyck says:

Guys – this is a really great video. Exactly what I was looking for!
