For those who are interested, the cover on a 2005 Echo is a bit different.
It is removed with a 10mm socket (4 bolts – 2 at front, 2 on top)

Thanks for posting this, it’s appreciated. The only thing that might lead a
complete novice astray is when you press the clip on the wire assembly
which attaches to the ignition coil. You aren’t replacing the coil, so no
need to remove disconnect it from the wire assembly for a simple spark plug
replacement. For those who may need to replace the ignition coil, from
experience, you will need a relatively small flat head screw driver to lift
the clip jus t a bit for it to disconnect it.

In my case I had a cylinder that was misfiring. I confirmed that by taking
it to Autozone and the ran the codes on their meter. So it was either the
spark plug or the ignition coil that failed. First I replaced the plug and
put back the original coil, it was still misfiring; then I replaced the
coil, and bingo, no more misfire. The coil was $99 US at Autozone.
