How to Replace a Transmission | Toyota Camry

Here’s how to replace an automatic transmission in most front wheel drive Toyota and Lexus vehicles!

In this video the transmission of this 2006 Toyota Camry SE V6 was burnt up by getting stuck in the snow. More on the background of this vehicle can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP7hQ-D3LxE

An attempt was made to try and save the transmission with over 360,000km on it by flushing the fluid, cleaning the valve body and using Lucas stop-slip transmission fix:

Regardless, the transmission had to be replaced. A used U151E transmission was sourced from a 2003.5 Toyota Camry V6. The only thing that had to be swapped over was the dipstick and the neutral safety switch.

Transmission replacement on this car involves dropping the exhaust, the subframe and steering rack, removing the CV axle (and thus suspension on both sides). Up at the top, the air intake assembly, wire harness, dipstick, cooler lines, shifter cables, starter, battery, air resonator and bell housing bolts need to be removed. The engine must be supported (in this case using an engine hoist), before the subframe can dropped down. The flywheel bolts are then disconnected from the torque converter before the transmission can be slid off the passenger side CV axle.

While the transmission is out of the vehicle, use the opportunity to replace wear items such as the rear main seal, power steering hoses or rack, rear oxygen sensor, engine mounts, sway bar bushings and end links and control arms, which would otherwise be difficult to replace while in the vehicle.

This was an amazing video. Most important lesson from this video… Change your transmission fluid at the recommended intervals, because changing the transmission in this vehicle is 100% not worth it.

DeeEyeWhy says:

I’ve removed a 3mz from an rx330 through the top since I didn’t feel it was safe enough to drop the subframe without a post lift.
Would it be possible to remove the engine and then pull the transmission out of this vehicle to get the tranny out? Or if not how would you recommend one drop the subframe without a two post lift?

Hey Speedkar99, can you please do a video for nissan xtrail T32 steering system

7:15 that one way to do it…

You are an amazing mechanic, wouldn't attempt this myself, hat's off to you sir, respect.

Jesse V1000 says:

Well seems like it’s easier to maintain a transmission than replace it lol

Mark Lance says:

How similar is this to doing it to a 2grfe engine u660e transmission camry?

Scott Moola says:

Pulling the entire engine & transmission out from up top is definitely easier than trying to drop that transmission from down below. I've done both ways myself as well. It's the most horrible job dropping it.

Michael Dunagan says:

You didn't find it necessary to Mark the universal joint that you took off the half shaft so you could get the orientation back correctly?

I agree that pulling the whole engine and transmission at the same time is the way to go even though it might be more work up front. It will be less tedious work than trying to do what you did here in the video. If you can't stop from dropping the cradle anyway, then why not bring the engine with it.

Collin West says:

This video would not have been possible without that toothbrush.

Christopher Cochran says:

… absolutely a fantastic video and a super job ! … personally, to me, it’s not worth the effort – sell the vehicle for whatever you can get, and buy another one … … the REAL key is: service your tranny every year, especially if it’s FWD, and don’t abuse it …

Michael Bezoski says:

Doing these kind of jobs on heavy equipment I always questioned nature's judgement as to why we were "not" given 2 more arms and hands. Still waiting for Speedkar99 toothbrushes. At 0:44 it looked like the wiring harness had rubbed the loam off the wires contained inside. Great job and thanks for taking us along by dragging the camera to record. On your back in a cold garage always adds to the enjoyment. Again thank you oh northern neighbor!

Emmett_Adventures says:

I only made it to 2 minutes and 54 seconds before deciding that I would gladly pay someone to do this. I replaced my battery starter and alternator as well as air conditioning magnetic clutch relay and a power window assembly and the stereo… I guess I got cocky there's no way I would do all this
