How to install a tachometer in a Toyota Echo or Yaris (Part 1 of 2)

This is how to install a tachometer in a Toyota Echo or Yaris. Part one is how to hook up the wires. Part two will explain my approach to mounting the tach o…

Hi – this was really helpful. I’ve got a 2002 Corolla, also without a tach
and clock, and I would like to install a tach. Would you happen to know if
the electronics would be similar to those on your Echo?

briankdrag says:

It’s a 2002. Thanks 🙂

ganymedeIV4 says:

Wow Extreeeeeeeemmmmmmeeeeeeee Thank you. You know I have a 2000 and it has
no Tachometer. And it’d be nice to see Engine Rpm’s. I plan to mount it
right behind the Steering wheel.

briankdrag says:

Glas you like it! I like the Mighty Car Mods videos from your countrymen.
They’re my new favorite YouTube show!

niffidude777 says:

Will This exact same tach work in a 2000 chevy cavalier? it is a 4 cylinder
2.2L… i have also seen this exact same tach and just wondering if the
connections would be similar and if it would work correctly. thanks!

Marc-andre Mathieu says:

I don’t know if you’re into a bit of electronics? Do you know what kind of
signal the computer sends on the green wire. Is it voltage = RPM or current
or another type of signal like Pulse Width Modulation???

Dup says:

Why don’t you use 12V,GND and Light from the clock connector ? 😛

briankdrag says:

No, I didn’t make the other one yet. The Flat Black paint is still drying.
I didn’t plan on painting the tach a different kind of black but… you’ll
see why I had to!

khaphishan says:

is there tachometer for 3 cylinder?can i just select 4 cylinder in 3
cylinder engine?

briankdrag says:

It shows engine revs.

cbobcbob100 says:

great job—thanks

Harvey Duncan says:

Have a clue what it’d be like to get a temp and oil gauge in there? I hate
having dummy lights considering the age and miles. The tach seems straight
forward enough, and would be nice to see where my revs sit more for the
sake of economy and convenience. If my dads in the car, he feels 45 in
third is “too high” and it’s only around what, 3,200rpm if I had to guess.
Temp and oil would be much more useful, though, for canyon-carving and
reliability as a whole, though.

Andrius Pasakarnis says:

hello lads can yuo help me plz I have 95* Toyota Corolla xli & i dont have
tahomenetr , can you help me installed tahomentr …

briankdrag says:

Your connections will be similar but I don’t know where they are. I don’t
know how a Cavalier is wired.

sponty911 says:

thanks a lot.. been researching for wiring tacho and i belive this is best,
neat and honest ! video..! thanks again..!! i guess its same with most of
the cars..! we need to hook to diag port for signal!

D Tellez says:

@Tellezcob1 in the min 4:55

94EglVisionTSI says:

Sir you are correct, it is the clocks power, ground, and accesory wires
w/connector.

STRIKER520 says:

if its an led in the tach it may not dim.

briankdrag says:

@RobertChamp Go for it.

ganymedeIV4 says:

IT IS FOR THE CLOCK!!!!!!

dwardu89 says:

hi, th plug underneath the fan/ a/c controlls is used for the clock, trip
meter and outside tempreture. to light the tachometer in dim and bright you
will have to connect the white wire to the green wire which connects to the
fan/ a/c controlls

Joshua H. McCarthy says:

can you tell me where you found the conector for the clock i cant find it
anywhere

briankdrag says:

The Green wire is right. If there’s no ACC fuse, then your acc fuse is in a
different place. “ACC” stands for “accessory.” You need to find out which
fuse is your “accessory fuse”

briankdrag says:

it’s 4-pinhole connector down under the speedo. Mine was taped to some
other wires and kind of hidden. Remove the cover to the instrument pod and
look down, deep down.

firstmusic00 says:

Shocked? LOL! 12 volts won’t kill you. You’d barely feel it. You disconnect
the battery so you don’t fry anything. Also, you should use an
“add-a-circuit” rather than wrapping the bare wire around the fuse prong.

xhandbasketx says:

I never understood a tachometer, or what it does.

fordf1502 says:

wow no tach no clock no radio what is it bare bones??

briankdrag says:

There might be. I’m not sure. You won’t break anything, but the tack will
indicate incorrect RPM’s.

TheFartenator says:

pfft, electrocuted. You cut the power so you dont short the system and
destroy the battery/wires.

briankdrag says:

No clue how to get an Oil Gage in there. Check the YarisWorld Forums.
They’ll know. In normal driving, I shift into 5th by 40 mph.

ToxicParabol says:

My guess on how you can get the dimmer to work on the tach (and this is
only if you want to get into the guts of the system) follow the wire that
leads from the dimmer to the speedometer and do a 3 way splice. Input ->
output, output. Doing that should make it a parallel circuit and thus,
powering both no problem. Let me know how that works for you.

menosteel says:

thank you 😛 work great

Reeper8888 says:

That is indeed the clock plug

rasata2 says:

Hi, i have the 2007 yaris, i bought the same tachometer u have, so i want
to know if the green wire go in the same place u plug it? and in the fuse
box, the port for acc. dosent have the fuse so i guess it use 15 like
your’s? thanks!

BradSk88 says:

Few things. First: Yep, the plug is for the clock 🙂 Second: You should
really solder, or at very least use some splice (scotch lock) connectors to
tap into those wires. Pressing them in and hoping they’ll stay forever is
risky. Third: I’d recommend getting the dimmer wire at the stereo if it’s a
2005. The wire will be green. If you can get me the year of the car I might
be able to get you a different location. The dimmer switch is a variable
ground and your gauge needs a positive signal.

yamahonkawazuki says:

@briankdrag Would a keyed fuse suffice? as in, circuit is active ONLY when
key is switched to the on position ( or accessory)

briankdrag says:

Sorry, I don’t know.

YDNID says:

That connector is for clock . nice show. i like it.

Jomel Maldonado says:

Thanks for posting this video, very useful information. Explained most
important details like Tach Signal wire and ACC wire. Thanks Again.

andrew sanchez says:

why does your echo sound better than mine ;-; lol

Eric Potter says:

I would have hooked the Red wire into the accessory fuse that the radio is
using, yeah you gotta make a splice. Bit deal. But, if anyone is wondering
it’s the yellow wire on the radio that supplies power and there is also a
ground you can tap into obviously (black). I think there is a dimmer switch
wire as well, Can’t remember the color or just wire that into the clock
wire. That would save you from running wires all over your car. Personally
I’d never just loosely wrap away around a fuse.

rasata2 says:

thanks for all, i installed suscesfully the tach!!

D Tellez says:

why? can i do this in a cavalier ?

baz king says:

sweet as im in australia and its the same place on the right had drive car.
thanks for ur help

chevyman5436 says:

yeah, i dont like being shocked by 12 volts
