Its not Toyota its the further tightening of fuel economy and emissions putting the pressure on the car makers. So far Toyota is resisting the small turbo gdi engine and the 8 to 10 speed automatics. Even Toyota is experiencing transmission problems and now engine problems.

I know what caused the engine problem that led to the recall of the Toyotas: The ugly new grill. The car couldn't handle its appearance and had a nervous breakdown.
Isn’t the sheet metal thinner to provide crumple zone so less of the energy from the impact is transferred to the car’s occupants?
The question about the Civic in regards to how many miles a car can have and still be a decent buy made me want to comment. A friend of mine from high school still has his 1992 Honda Civic hatchback with a 5spd manual. He lives in New York now, used to live in Indiana. He's had other cars as well, but that one Civic has remained constant since he got it in 2002 as his first car. It had 112k on it and he paid 2 grand for it. It now has almost 700 (yes, SEVEN HUNDRED) thousand miles on it and still runs strong. He replaced the transmission a few years back and just replaced the fuel pump a few weeks ago. He doesn't mind putting in a little extra like that here or there because he still loves the car and intends to keep it until he dies.
