Good Mechanic + Bad Parts = VERY Bad Situation | Toyota Evap System Problems

Good Mechanic + Bad Parts = VERY Bad Situation | Toyota Evap System Problems

A Combination of a good mechanic and bad parts basically reverts you back to the same as having a bad mechanic.

In the shop we have a 2007 Toyota 4Runner which was diagnosed correctly but a counterfeit part caused the diagnosis to derail and go back to square one which is why it’s in our shop.

In this video we run some tests on the Evap system, a system that most folks and mechanics still don’t understand or can diagnose properly.

I’ll do my best in this video to explain Toyota’s intrusive EVAP system, How it works and how to diagnose some of it’s common problems.

AMD!! I am a General Motors tech. I recently bought a 2006 LEXUS IS250. It cranks but will not start. No codes and it has a used motor in it and it is in time. I have fuel and spark. Any suggestions on where to start or what to check first?

Carmen MonteCalvo says:

Counterfeit Chinese parts strike again. Well done AMD. "I've never seen that part number on an '07 4runner" badass, sir!

2007? It looks brand new!
2000 to 2010 generation cars were the best!

Don't you have to Close the vent valve with the scan tool to smoke the system?

i'm a mechanic for almost 40 years so i do my own work, and aside from oil and other minor things, i use strictly OEM parts and recommend them to my customers and tell them about the pros and cons and let them decide. i have a 2001 4runner with over 400k and still runs great. recently replaced timing belt and water pump and associated parts at correct interval. i've had it for 10 years(2013), and aside from the trans going out in 2017 and being replaced with an OEM reman unit, no other issues have surfaced. diff lube has been changed, brake fluid has been flushed and replaced with synthetic, power steering fluid, which is automatic transmission fluid(ATF), has been flushed and replaced as well. same is said with my kid's mom's 2005 camry. oil/filter replaced every 5,000 miles or less, tires rotated every oil change, transmission fluid changed when required and routine maintenance.

Explanation at 15:30 could help with a graph from Toyota of vapor pressure vs. approximate leak size.

I buy online for parts from a Toyota dealer as they offer discounts .. online only

jason cook says:

I deal with this all the time, I always suggest oem parts and explain it will be 2-3x the parts cost but it likely will last the same length of time as whats on the odometer when it failed. People freak when they find out a oem cv is 4-800 bucks and he oem rebuild kits are several hundred per cv so they want aftermarket cv thats under 200. Therefore I have to explain that the am cv might last a week or might last 2 years, either way they will pay the labor cost over and over even if they want the one with lifetime warranty. I even try to explain that a used CV is better than aftermarket but all they can see is that shiney lifetime warranty.
You are missing out on good money and good results not offering simple frame and floorpan coatings. pressure wash out/off the loose rust/dirt/old paint then allow to dry and then apply ospho, wait 24 hrs then spray apply two coats of corroseal and your done. This method can last over a decade if the cleaning and application are done right and trust me its not rocket science. You simply keep track of materials and charge actual labor time to complete minus drying times. You will need a few things and a custom spray tube for boxed frames but that is easy enough to make yourself to work with commonly available tools.

I just bought an OEM 07 gas cap for my Taco…had no idea counterfeit parts were such a problem.

Robert Colin Shepherd says:

Toyoda! Yes, this is the real product name, but focus groups in American car sales changed it for appeal. Still not exactly sure WHAT that appeal is.

Does XTOOL D7 have this EVAP test?

Raul Ramirez says:

Could you tell me if the Xtool D8 is capable of performing this very Evap System Test.

FlatFifties says:

AMD, what sort of undercoating would you recommend for a 2019 4Runner that is not rusty yet? A local company that I have recently talked to over the phone uses a black tar like undercoating that apparently flashes off and sets up after a period of time, Maybe it is similar to bed lining? Would you recommend something like that or would fluid film be preferable?

Sakar Shrestha says:

Hello sir, l love your videos. Can you please make a video about the Toyota Corolla fielders hybrids also? Thank you.
