88,
Ok, I had one of those “duh” moments and then a mechanical epiphany… the ‘bolt’ you’re putting your breaker bar on is NOT a bolt but an attach point for a level, in this case your breaker bar, which when pulled toward you (front of car) releases the tension allowing the belt to slip off. Once I got that, it was all down hill. Finished alternator replacement last night at 2350 hours. BTW, Harbor Freight has an $20 tool for this. Thanks for your help. Rob, KC5RET
sorry, i’ve never done it on an XR. I will research and try to find out.
Do you know if this method is the same for a 2004 Matrix XR? From almost everything I’ve read, the bolt that has to be loosened is the bolt through the tensioner pulley itself.
Either way, that long breaker bar looks like the trick.

Glenn, Thank you and thank you for the comment. Nice to know people like you appreciate a video that shows a “first person point of view” on how install/replace parts without me saying one word. I tried talking while recording and fixing, but it was too hard. I figure, forget all the talk, people should understand the video if you just follow… “what you see, is what you do” thing. Please watch my other videos, subscribe and share. Have a nice day.
Great video! this is the best diy demonstration i’ve ever seen. the editing was superb and i am bound to see more of what you are producing. the signature (thumbs up/hang loose) is perfect.
you are very welcome. i try to make videos, “straight to the point” a first person point of view so all can understand. a “what you see is, what you do” kind of thing. it’s funny that i do not talk at all and you understand how to do it. please watch my other videos and share. have a nice day.
I dream of an internet where every DIY vid is done exactly like this one. thanks man.
best how to video i’ve ever seen. no talkie all showie. thumbs up baby.
Thanks for the video. Saved about $160 doing it myself.
no problem, i think it’s better if you have a 24 inch breaker bar. it would be easier. as see on my vid, i used a 2ft, 1/2 inch ratchet. good luck man
Thanks for the rreply. Im using a Matco passthrough socket wrench with the adapter for a normal socket and the extender that connects to the other side for leverage, using it essentailly as a cheater bar. Applying slow constatnt torque. Im just trying to figure this out before either giving it another try or turning in my man card and having it towed to a mechanic.
could be the angle of the wrench in which the cast nut is snapping off. i never seen or experienced one snapping off. just curious, what kind of tools you are using to do this?
no you don’t have to loosen it
You dont have to loosen the middle (main) retaining bolt do you?
On my sons car, 2003 Pontiac Vibe (same enngine as the Toyota) the serpentine belt broke. We followed this and other videos and it appears to be easy to rotate the nut on the belt tensioner. When we did it it didnt want to rotate. Went slow & steady with the torque and the cast nut on the side of the tensioner snapped off. OK it was old and maybe frozen so we got another tensionser. Replaced the old one and tried to get the belt on and the same thing happened. Any ideas before I buy another?
Thank you, please subscribe and have a nice day.
