22R to EV Swap: 1981 Toyota Pickup Hilux 4×4 All Electric Conversion with Hyper9 motor Tesla Battery

Project Toyvolta:

We started with a bone stock 1981 Toyota Pickup 4×4 with a 5 speed 22r motor and converted it to an all electric drivetrain. Including power steering and air conditioning.

The end result is a truck that is not only faster, but more reliable.

Motor: 144 KV Hyper9
Charging: 3.3 KWH Elcon
Adapter: Flash Drive Motors
Transmission: Original Toyota

So cool! Great job!!!! I’ve got a 22R Toyota that just hit 200K so not touching that baby BUT I’ve been thinking about this with an engine for EV West for a mid 80s 4Runner. This looks even better though I’m just wondering about the brakes. Did y’all do a conversion with that? I’ve heard they can be problematic with conversions.

Btw I once brought this idea up in an environmental science lecture in 2014 as the speaker was comparing C02 emissions of a brand new Prius (with the whole manufacturing process) to a older gasoline vehicle.

I curiously said: “why can’t we just take older cars and swap out the gas engines with electric ones?”.

He said it was impossible, and it would never happen. I was young and naive, now I say f*ck the naysayers – they’ll always exist.

Hannah Hamstra says:

This is AWESOME!!!

Julian Wallis says:

I want this so bad lol. I think the Ford Maverick showed that pickup manufacturers shouldn't ignore the demand for small fuel efficient pickups or even EV pickups.

manofreedom says:

I like this conversion but I need a minimum of 350 miles of range.

erik 4205 says:

how much will it cost to replace the batteries when they die?

Zac d says:

My pawpaw left me his 92 Toyota pickup. Would y’all do this for me? Obviously at a cost

Stephen Hill says:

Beautiful truck.

Chris Foster says:

What'd you get the power steering out of? Did you use a honda's electric steering system?
I've seen a lot of people go with those, so I'm curious to know what everyone's doing lol.

Also did you run all those tesla modules in series configuration?

Alrukitaf says:

If it’s too bouncy maybe try carbon fibre wheels – may air bag suspension?

Leonardo Rodriguez says:

If you turn a 2wd car into electric. It becomes a 4wd?

Rafe Natho says:

Disrepair I say. That poor Toyota. You cut his nuts off. He's scared for life. I can see it now, some sissy la la, soy milk latte drinking hipster wearing plaid and bellbottoms and a handlebar mustache driving. Shame on you.

Artisan Business says:

How much it cost for you to build be a truck based on an old tacoma?

Shane Rohrbach says:

I did my 720 Nissan year and half ago! It's amazing.

Andrés Mejia C. says:

How much for that convertion ? What did you use to complete that proyect?

shamos999 says:

Noooooooooooooooooooooo

Dustin Byrd says:

$20, 000 worth of parts, this stuff going have to come down before electric is even an option

NSUScooter says:

I wanna see videos of this thing shifting gears and how well it does on the freeway in high gear!

IAMSatisfied says:

Parts alone on this conversion are at least $20K.

shaun coyne says:

Can you do my fj80! I want soo bad

Serena Lim says:

Awesome, I'll take it!

Stu says:

question: could you put a small Yanmar diesel generator or Honda gas generator in the bed and turn the truck into a diesel hybrid? And if so how hard would it be to accomplish?

Vueru Kozu says:

I have a question if you guys wouldn’t mind, would a conversion be possible by someone with little knowledge of cars? I wanna try it as a project but I am not sure. Thank you ☺️

arroba#numero says:

Nice, fantastic I love that someone does what I dream of.
Rich Rebuilds did both ev conversion and a Tesla fuel conversion just for fun and he realized it is much easier to make an ev conversion than the other way round

Warm Springs Native in Oregon says:

What is the cost for this Conversion? Please answer everyone is asking besides me? I have an 84 Toyota Hilux solid axle 4wd 2L Diesel engine with 320180 miles as of today. Truly not a speed racer but it goes anywhere in 4wd low.

Samuel Arauz says:

Hi I sent you a mail I need some help hope you answer me

The1trueDave says:

Kudos for building something that's 'just fast enough'! Not everything has to have 800hp or do 0-60 in 3 sec. You've got something that will keep up with modern traffic and it still looks pretty stock. Nice work!

Gerold Sewcharan says:

Fucking sick you guys, very cool.

Cor et Manus says:

So now you use electricity that is produced by burning fossil fuels to power your concerted vehicle. Seems less efficient like a backwards move if you think about it but then again a lot of other people will benefit from your irrational decision to convert. Then you can invest a bunch more when the batteries wear out and you need to refresh but hey it sounds cool on the surface if your brainwashed and silly enough to buy into the absurd idea of “clean” power production. The only thing futuristic about it is how they figured out how to bilk money from people in a new and different form of highway robbery. Should have left it stock a shame looks like a sweet truck that you did a disservice to.
