Been a Subie fan for 20 years now after a long fling with European cars. Let me tell you about replacing the alternator in my ‘82 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel. It seized about a mile from home, snapping both belts that ran the water pump. I’m babying it home as the temperature gauge reaches for the sky. At the time (1999-2000), Mercedes wanted $5k for a rebuilt 3L 5cyl. diesel motor. I get it home, open the hood and start to loosen the alternator bolts…all FIVE of them!! They’re just a nice car and parts are really cheap because, like Subaru, in the 1970’s-1980’s they only made 3 chassis and two diesels…and made millions of them. (They had gas motors too but I’m not familiar with them.) Had a timing chain, not a belt.
Anyway, though I loved my European cars, they “required a level of commitment” to keep them running. I took my first ‘99 Outback from 72k miles to 355k when the frame rusted from Pa.’s road salts. Yup, did the HG’s at 180k, for $1k at an independent Subie garage. Did the 2.5L->2.2L swap around 300k miles, bad main bearings, for $1k, same garage.
Love your channel!!
P.s. the AWD in it was bulletproof! Made me a huge fan of AWD!

He made all good points, cant argue with anything he said.

Raven Cloudwarrior says:

I had the EJ25 blown head gasket (vapor leak). Dealer used a stop leak radiator solution to fool me. Whatever, it had 143k miles and was ready for a proper service. I pulled out the thermostat and refilled the radiator with distilled water every trip until a year later I had vacation time to pull the engine in my buddy’s garage. We had it pulled out after a couple days monkeying around. Bought steel head gaskets, new water pump, timing chain, spark plugs, starter, and gave her the works. With all the money I saved, I bought a new set of tires. Only problem after was a cracked spark plug that we were sloppy with. I’ve since moved across the country and worn out the tires. I won’t be touching the duty c solenoid when the torque bind starts acting up. But gosh, Subaru makes everything else easy.

Bobby Twotone says:

Please do a time lapse engine removal from running I need to see the 35-45 min time frame for my self as every Tom and Harry will see this video and think it actually takes that little time to remove an engine

Walter Duran says:

@Mr. Subaru, how about the Subaru Ascent? Would you recommend it for family of 5?

Hector Figueroa says:

I have a 2010 forester and I want to start changing parts for sti upgrade. What year parts from an sti should I be looking at

Kathy Kaura says:

Everyone in Taos NM has a Subaru so the mechanics there are pros at fixing them; no worries.

Kerron Manwaring says:

lol hondas & acuras.

Jeremy Toms says:

100% avoid your Stealership. Found a local mechanic around the corner that promised he could fix anything. He can. Costs have dropped to practically nothing/minimal and my car keeps on running. It is not even worth my time to DIY.

Sherri Joubert says:

My Forester reminds me of my VW Beetle. 4 cylinders 2 on each side of the engine. The alternator is where the old generator used to be. They have fancy stuff like forced air heat and air conditioning, and oxygen sensors and check engine lights, but really, they're just a big expansion of VW's old architecture.

Ayden Baker says:

As a automotive technician, Subarus are my favorite vehicles to work on.

James Patric says:

Lizard in ur engine bay

Bob Braun says:

In general they are easy to work on. the only thing I hate is the lower ball joint bolt always breaks even with lots of heat. That's what we get in the north east

Tim Silva says:

Yeah, much easier than most makes on typical maintenance since everything is up front vs. most front wheel drive cars have everything crammed in sideways. Spark plugs aren't that big of a deal on my 99 Legacy GT. I don't even have to lift the car for oil changes despite it's low stance. 225k and original starter, alternator, power steering components.

el el says:

i only work for dealerships who lets me make money for them and also aloe me to make money for me, i hate when they are so strict about you bringing friend or family member cars im glad not all dealers are like that but some shopforemans are straight haters

strategic services says:

I thought you said in another video subaru has problems with head gaskets? How do prevent that from happening?

CentralYTGamingHub says:

I got the 2022 Impreza, how long does your break pads last with AWD. In miles?

Outside the Target Demographic says:

The wife's Chevy had a dead battery today. As it charged, I figured due to its age and the winter, that it might be time to pull it and swap it. The steps were:

*Locate the battery
*Remove plastic lid that covers the battery, which, oh yeah, HAS A COMPUTER WITH THREE WIRING HARNESSES
*Remove the computer from on top of the battery, with a 10mm socket
*Relocate computer where it won't short out
*Remove 3 body panel brads, remove body panel
*Remove last 10mm bolt holding battery down
*Remove battery

WT actual F!

My Subaru, open hood, REMOVE THE FREAKING BATTERY!

Never buying American again.

juan Perez says:

Subaru? Easy to maintain? nope. they are hell.

Samuel Burns says:

I have a 2003 Outback wagon. Most minor repairs I do myself and if I had a decent driveway at least ora garage, I would do more of it.

J says:

All makes perfect sense! No wonder we’ve had two Forester’s in a row!

apachelives says:

Cheapest easiest car to work on, but can be expensive if you don't do your own work. However lost interest after late 90s – Gen 3 legacy/liberty/outback had to replace the stupid plastic fuel sender multiple times from cracking, head gaskets (easy). The Gen 4 legacy/liberty i had every bushing was toast, every lock actuator, dash cracked, head gaskets, it was a pile or rubbish. Gave up after that car. The Gen 2 legacy/liberty I had kept going like a tank with little to no issues. The only major issue I had was a bad MAF sensor – I soldered the joints and fixed it (original part 20+ years old).

Michael Kassel says:

why did both shops I go to say they don't like to work on them?
