As an HD tech, the muddiest shit was the worst to work on. Soapy water is my favorite for connectors, the water dissolves the dirt so easily. I then dry it after with contact cleaner!
I usually just try to 1st close the clips. Then agitate them. Haven't broken one since. But I'm sure you do more engine work than I do. Wonder if just plain old dawn degreaser and water would work…?
WD40 is a water displacing lubricant more similar to fluid film, not a penetrating lubricant like kroil or moovit

I use silicone spray and a lil heat from a heat gun works really good working on your shit in the desd of winter in vt
