I wanted to get the baked oil off so it wouldn’t liquify and circulate through the engine. May not have been necessary, but since this is a once every 10 year job, I wanted to get everything as clean as possible.
The only thing I don’t get is why you cleaned the oil off the inside of the valve cover.
If you have misfires on multiple cylinders, may want to examine the ignition coil. They’re known to start crapping out around 120,000 miles on the pre-2004 models. It’s a easy job to do and the packs run around $100 – look for the Wells C1228.
Thanks for the info, my 2001 forester is having the exact same problem but I’ve let it go for a while now. Pinging, transmission hesitation, shaking while idling, bogging down when accelerating or going up hills. CEL codes say I’ve got misfires on every cylinder. Opened it up and there’s oil on the spark plug boots. I’ll be changing everything you did and probably the PCV valve too. 130,000 miles on it.
Thanks for taking the time to share that info. I’ve got oil all over my spark plug boots, so I’ll be changing my gaskets as well while I’m in there. Looks relatively simple.
