Cat G says:

Great info but possibly leaving the radio off would be great, Thanks

luke bowman says:

hey brian. thanks for doin these video. iv watched a few of your. just
woundering iv got a ej205 wrx engine just about to install do the head
gaskets.. im running a fairly high boost level an useing the old head bolts
still. just want to know should i do the head bolts up tighter than
standed..is so how much more should i do them up ?

Gage Griffin says:

So what exactly do i have to do if i reuse the bolts

spike666spike666 says:

Another noob question. Is this torque method for the DOHC too? or is this
just for the SOHC? Again thanks for all the much appreciated help!

spike666spike666 says:

It’s just a quarter turn of the wrench until like Brian said “you feel like
you’re gunna break something”

briansmobile1 says:

Yes. And oil the threads too.

spike666spike666 says:

What if I decide to re-use my head bolts? Do I still need to do this torque
method?

briansmobile1 says:

I’m sure I don’t know!

robert howe says:

hi brian want to ask something what would be the best subaru engine to sawp
with a 1972 vw bug?? cuz i was thinking to use a 2.5 liter just wanted to
know what would be best one?

bleedingink86 says:

when you do the last two steps of the quarter turns. how much ft. Lbs. for
the last two steps?

Jonathan Brundage says:

Hey boss, enjoyed the video, i’ve got the heads off of my 02 forester,
passes the 0.0025 test but not the 0.002 test. you ever run into anything
this close to subaru specs? is it worth milling?

Frederick Bock says:

Brian, 11 ft lbs is nothing compared to the old US cars which are maybe 70
lbs, 11 ft lbs could be done with your wrist, how car that hold compression
with so low torque setting

jamesnm21 says:

sounds just about like this: youtube.om/watch?v=zVDO2V0wawE (you’ll have to
type in the “c” in com)

damommakitty says:

gladly gave thumbs down for making us sit thru back ground NOISE. WTH

briansmobile1 says:

Way to go Jared!

briansmobile1 says:

I’ve used them. Some people really like them. I like Fel-pro better for
this application.

jamesnm21 says:

replacing head gaskets on 2003 legacy 2.5 (EJ251?) I heard that the felpro
gaskets sometimes fail on the EJ25 engines and that the updated OEM MLS
gasket should be used instead. Have you ever experienced this on either one
of these engines, or any subaru for that matter? Thanks.

briansmobile1 says:

Thanks Steve- from the most amazing aircraft bone yard in the world!

briansmobile1 says:

You can, I don’t recommend it.

Justine A. says:

Hey, Can I ask how much you paid to get that job done? Also, where did you
get it done? I am thinking I need to get mine done and am trying to find a
good mechanic

KER0423 says:

Brian I’ve got the heads off my 01 subaru 2.5, on one head the intake
valves are about an 1/8″ from being fully seated. Do i need to adjust the
valves before re-installing the head or should they be ok? If so how would
i get the valves to fully seat? Thanks Brian for all your great vids

stugats77 . says:

i see the pistons are old ones would it be advisable to replace the pistons
while the engine is out? would it need a rebore or clean up off the
cylinder if i was to replace pistons? need advice thanks ina dvance

briansmobile1 says:

I do it by yield/feel. I know that’s not helpful, but it’s true. It’s
likely 18-22ft/lbs.

Dave T V says:

Love your OIL Filter. Fram…

briansmobile1 says:

You SHOULD have some hollow alignment dowels sticking up from the motor. If
not, set the head on cardboard and drop the bolts in the holes. Then set
the gasket on the block. Then hold the head over the block and gently allow
the head bolts that are now dangling down go through the holes via gravity.

David Lines says:

Brian I am having a horrible time installing my head back on my 2003 civic
ex. It is so acquired to align it without moving the gasket. I tried using
pencils to align it but no dice. I also shouldn’t have taken the rockers
off like Haynes says. I probably should have just replaced the engine for a
japanese one for $950. Any thoughts?

briansmobile1 says:

I answer this same question about three times a week… I’m not mad, but I
am going caps lock so people will see it. Please thumb up this comment. YOU
DON’T HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE TO DO THE HEADS. IT IS HOWEVER MUCH, MUCH
FASTER AND EASIER. Thanks. ; )

Erik Frank says:

I love the video. Is there any way to replace the gaskets without removing
the engine?

Timothy Branthoover says:

Did someone answer you question yet? flashing check engine light usually
means a cylinder misfire and raw fuel is going past the o2 sensor warns of
catalyst damage.

jmsrock says:

nancy chavez says:

How much does it cost to fix a blown head gasket

gosetto69 says:

Hey Brian I have a ej25 with a sohc the lifters are knocking and I want to
tackle this problem myself bc I don’t have to money to take it to a shop
and i havnt pulled the engine on a subaru before done regular maintenance
but nothing this major on the H4 I was wondering if u could help me out
with where to find the info on how to replace the lifters and valve springs
or if happen to b working on a sohc ej25 if u could post a video on how go
do so would b great thanks

jamesnm21 says:

Just finished head gasket replacement. Ran engine 3 times for a few seconds
each time with no issue. 4th time it started making a knocking noise at
idle that sounds like it could be piston slap. I’m pretty sure I got the
timing correct, even turned it over by hand a dozen times with no issue
before starting it. Could it be valve interference? I turned it over by
hand again several times after the knocking started but still couldn’t
hear/feel anything. Don’t wanna tear it right back down…

Reggie Wrinkle says:

Brian, what do you torque the intake manifold bolts to?

briansmobile1 says:

habit. Sometimes it makes a difference.

on sway says:

Can you think of any disadvantage of doing the 180 loosen step on cast iron
engine? Maybe that will seat head gasket flatter?

briansmobile1 says:

I have the machine shop do them.

steven williams says:

Great job,you cleared up some questions i had.Keep up the good work ! Steve
(Auto repair pro’s) Tucson,Az

briansmobile1 says:

Either. This is a 2.5

briansmobile1 says:

Not left thread.

Poorstarvingmusician says:

Thanks! Yep got her out yesterday, did it before to replace the clutch.
Pretty easy when you have a chain hoist and trolley system in your barn.
Thing is I can’t get the timing sprocket bolts (17MM) lose. WWT? They are
really tight, must have some lock tight on them or something. Used my
breaker bar on the crank and another on the bolts. Even with the belt still
on it slipped some teeth. Any ideas?

Ted Berner says:

Having videos like this is 100 times better than any Chilton or Haynes. I
not only know exactly what to do, I can even avoid making your minor
mistakes, Brian. This is nectar, pure and simple. Thanks dude for doing
this service for mankind who never serviced a subaru before, namely myself.
Everything I need was in this and the removal video. BRAVO!

briansmobile1 says:

I LOVE helping grateful people such as yourself. YOU are welcome!

wafrederick says:

Don’t use aftermarket headgaskets during a headgasket replacement for the
Subaru engines, the OEM headgasket which is a Fel Pro is the way to go.Spend
the money on the electronic torque wrench with the angle settings built
in.The Fel Pros are marked how they go.Minus well replace the timing belt
and water pump at the same time if it has not been done yet.
