Before puttin the cover back on i would of turned the engine over twice
just to make sure everything WAS ok.
You ever have anyone tell you, that you look like Captain Benjamin Franklin
“Hawkeye” Pierce, B.S., M.D.??
Cool videos, I feel confident to take over the the world of Subaru’s ;).
Tell the camera guy to not zoom in so much, you loose focus by trying to
refocus.. and then nobody knows what the hell is going on lol. Keeping the
engine full frame was best viewing for me.
The smaller cover is an inspection cover no? This way you do not need to
get to and remove the entire cover just to inspect the condition of the
belt. Just a guess.
Such a great and informative video.
this guy makes it look so easy.
the bob ross of subaru engines.
…lovely video thank you and I ordered the tolls i need to do my SOHC
legacy engine overhaul… much appreciated the hard work providing these
video’s also please pass thanks to the Subaru Tech Mike for sharing his
knowledge with theonline community.. I would really love to be able to
share notes with you as I tackle my own engine overhaul
I love these and I hope you put more subie stuff up
You are the man Mike, from Australia:)
If I was to reuse my old head bolts and followed the subaru torque specs in
order would I snap my head bolts? or is it OK to follow the oem specs like
1. 22 ft lbs 2. 51 ft lbs 3. loosen etc etc etc. Great videos btw! Thanks!
Carey you became so old!
Does the machine work include setting the piston/valve clearance? I noticed
you just checked the trueness of the head. If I were to order a fresh
shortblock and send the heads out to be rebuilt, would I be able to install
the headgaskets without checking valve clearance as well?
Awesome video, a joy to watch. The reason I think the cambelt cover is
split in two parts is to allow for someone to inspect the condition of the
cambelt without having to remove any of the engine components. They can
just remove the 3 bolts and small plastic piece to see the belt. To remove
the larger piece, or if it was one large piece, you would need to remove
the harmonic balancer and all of the bolts.
I have a 2.5 motor,in my sand rail great Video definitely will help me, and
save me some money….Have the camera guy put some lube on the camera
tripod Kinda noisy Great job Thanks for doing these.
Brilliant! Very clear, very knowledgeable. By far the best video of the type
a head gasket can be seen as a mechanical fuse. That MLS gasket is just a
stronger fuse. The OEM gasket will pop sooner but that will be a sign for
some serious engine trouble and the popped HG will prevent further engine
damage. That MLS HG will seal longer, maybe even till after some serious
engine damage has been done… bottomline: When choosing the HG you have to
decide for yourself which philosophy you support: weak fuse or strong fuse.
Cool video ,I like watching engines being rebuild very cool
Great vid. First time I’ve ever seen someone use a torque wrench to loosen
a bolt though.
good work dude!
Pretty sure the smaller belt cover comes off to verify cam vs crank
position without having to remove everything else
This is very interesting (watched part one and two). Some day I may have to
replace a timing belt or repair (or replace) and automatic transmission,
maybe before I’m going to build a new computer.
Let us see how Mike is going to install the engine !!
Yeah, Subaru-Mike is cool!
Yes, that video is coming soon… We also have another car (that was towed
in) where in the coarse of 6 hours, he removes the engine and installs a
newly rebuilt engine and then drives the car away on its own power. All in
a days work of Subaru Mike!
This video is brilliant!!
That giant cactus 0_0
great video!
What a good video this just made my life happy. Keep the vids up
You guys saved me a ton of cash, I know my way around tools but this vid
helped me gain the confidence to tear into my Impreza. I took it out,
swapped gaskets, put it back in and it started right up. Thanks for your
efforts I really appreciate it.
Good questions Carey, helps explain what Mike means
Carey, you’re very good… documentator? That’s not a word, but you know
what I mean. You ask the right questions, and film the right things.
Awesome video and thank you for the great detail you go into but please for
the love of all that is holy lubricate your tripod next time.
very very good thank you
Love how detailed this is.
Thanks Carey.
Thanks!
Interesting…..
thanks for the video and good explaination.
Cool..interesting video
Thanks!
Thanks for explaining timing belt line up, and the tools to hold crank and
cam pulley, mistake made by most people in replacing timing belts.
Thanks!
Think the cover comes in two parts because it makes inspecting the belt
easier?
are you going to video tape him putting that engine back in the car
Does thee engine have to be at TDC before installing the heads? Didn’t see
a reference for tdc.
i know you probably dont read the comments any more , but ive just got my
self a wrx jap import and the things that worried me about the engine
rebuild have been made to look so easy here. great vid guys . loving your
work from across the pond!
If I lived across the street from this man, I would spend my weekends and
afternoons after work on my front lawn, in a lawn chair, with a cooler of
beer next to me, and just watch him assemble these engines.
