Subaru Baja gets timing and head gasket refresher. Trying Chinese parts for science!

My 2003 Baja hit 200,000 miles in April and I thought it was time to replace the timing components and head gaskets since they were the old single layer graphite type. Also, I wanted to adjust the valves because of a noise I was hearing. As it turns out, the sound is piston slap and not valve noise. Old car sounds, I guess! I replaced the head gaskets with a Six Star set I had on hand from a previously planned job that I didn’t use. The timing components were from a Gates kit. All of the pulleys said China on these except for the tensioner, which said made it Canada. I am experimenting for the sake of science, I know that one should always use Japanese timing components but my local parts store had the Gates kit so I went that route. Since it’s my car, I don’t mind experimenting. I did install a belt guard in case the tensioner fails.
