The same thing happened to me on a 1982 Datsun Napzs Z 2.4 water pump/ timing cover! I was so Mad! Three days later I extracted the broke/ sheared off hunk of left over threaded shaft out of the engine block. Slow and steady!

Ray, before you replace the engine, why not try a 1/4 inch diameter tube drill for metal, then re-tap the hole for a different bolt? You can cut around the easy out and re-tap the hole and save the block maybe?
