How to take a stock stereo out of a subaru legacy/Outback 2005

I got this car used and didn’t know how to do anything on it. There were no videos on how to do this stuff so here you go.

Awesome, thanks!

Joby Elliott says:

I don’t think the keys are actually in. In these cars the red light around
the ignition comes on when the keys *aren’t* in and a door is or has been
recently open.

decodunne says:

Hi, my stereo is the exact same, I own a 2003 Subaru legacy B4, jap import,
so my hazard button is on the opposite side, I’m in Ireland, Ive been
looking for a replacement fascia for my McIntosh head unit to use a single
din head unit! Any ideas where I can get one mate?

hondaridah420 says:

Got the same exact car 😀 thanks for detailed instructions!

RJ13McL says:

Thanks heaps for posting this video, it made removing my stereo very easy.
I had no idea where to start before checking this out. I was working on a
2004 JDM model though and had pull out the 2 very bottom screws and the 4
screws through the metal bracket – whole thing came out easy.

iKeepitReel says:

you should also include a video on how to put an aftermarket deck in!

Robert Cantuaria says:

Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Trevor57 says:

Take the goddamn keys out.

John Moore says:

if you read the manual you can see that there is a way to detach the
antenna wire from the radio, but thanks for the video!

crutchfield sells oem face plates

SubiNwoofer says:

hey guys i have an 05 outback dash and setup is the same as this and i was
looking into buying a new head unit, basically there is no cheap fix that
will get you aircon etc aswell unless you can find a macentosh i think its
called which is the same as this but found on the top model versions, same
unit but with rca ports for amps. Otherwise you need a line down or an amp
that you can attach the speaker wise straight up such as an alpine mrx v60

BEAST5409 says:

THANK YOU! i have an 07 outback wagon, and its virtually the exact same
except for a few more buttons. i’ve been looking for instructions on how to
do this forever so thanks for uploading!

GeekCompany says:

Anyone know how to get the door panel off, i can get the bottom off, with
the snap things, there is a screw in the door handle, but it still wants to
stay on is there something im missing. Could you make a video of this
please.

Michael Hetz says:

Great video. Looks just like my ’09 Legacy. Thanks for the tips.

karthik Palaniappan says:

The video is really good and very well taken. I own an outback, but outback
and legacy share most of the things. I would suggest you to tittle it
outback/legacy so that it will result in more people viewing.

oberon77no says:

Just did the first removal on my 2004 AT. For those who wonder how to take
the parts off. You have to gently pry the silver ring around the
gearshifter up on all sides. Then you can just pull it off and remove the
big gray plastic with the ashtray. I pulled from the left hand lower side
first and loosened it gently. Hope this is for some help for all you AT
guys out there whom are unsure how to get it out.

TheIKUAGM18 says:

Hey Everyone, how can i put in an Av car tuner into my 4gen 2006 subaru
outback. Due to subaru framing their head unit i will have to cut out the
template for the AV tuner correct?

Kathy Woodbury says:

This is definitely the best I have seen and most detailed. Toward the end
the voice got a little quiet, so I’ll have to listen again, but it is a
very good video.

Riccardo2000 says:

This topic helped me a lot, thank you very much !

wyoonthefirst says:

Thanks man!

illustratortom says:

Thank you! this helped me out so much.

szhjcn says:

Great Video, also found photo’s of someone who took the unit apart.
Basically bottom line is you cannot replace this unit. However I assume
that one could install a standard stereo above the main facia where some
models have the Nav unit. Then I guess you just need to take the wires out
of the in-built stereo and run these to the new unit with a ISO adaptor
cable. Anyone done this?

windbk5 says:

Good video. Is there a specific radio kit you used to replace the stock
deck down to a aftermarket single din?

iKeepitReel says:

is it different if my car is not manual?

digitalduck says:

For more information on how to replace the stereo, especially for those of
you with automatic climate controls, search the Legacy board (legacygt dot
com) for “official-dual-hvac-double-din-jdm-kit-thread”:

cowcrap43 says:

good one. nice video, theres now less of a chance i’ll break my car
installing a band expander.

tamolili says:

Is it the samething on a legacy 2011

illustratortom says:

The antenna wire is actually plugged just behind where the trash container
was… Youre either going to have to slice the wire or buy an adapter.

jmacp19 says:

Thanks for the geat video! I’ve been searching and this is the best I’ve
found so far for a legacy

xdtfx says:

Thanks for making this video instruction available. Was driving in my 05
LGT earlier today listening to a CD in my stereo on low volume, all of a
sudden, the whole right side of my speakers went out. Now I need to pull
this POS out and figure out what the hell is going on.

jamo williams says:

The 05 to current models the interior is pretty similar. And thank you

jamo williams says:

I’m planning on splicing it.

the4stringking23 says:

You don’t have to remove the shift knob, you can just let the plastic cover
hang. Not as convenient but a whole lot easier

jamo williams says:

@the4stringking23. Right but it’s really not that difficult to remove it
and it is very helpful for it to be out of the way while working. Also
there’s a greater chane of scratching it or losing something if you leave
it on.

jamo williams says:

I wild but I don’t have one as soon As I get one I will and please rat

Mitchell Burk says:

has anyone done this with the harmon kardon system. does the auxilary cord
that comes ran to the center console remain functional after swaping head
units?
