How To Replace Subaru Ball Joints

While having the car stowed away for a few months I forgot about the left ball joint clunking away. These ball joints have been in a box for a while and it was time to put them to use.

The job can be a pain in the ass for a few reasons. There are a few techniques to getting ball joints out easily, this is how I do them while sitting on jack stands.

Hi Duane, I enjoy watching your channel. Just one quick question here. Wouldn't it be easier to swing the lower control arm if you removed the sway bar link? My Legacy GT has poly bushings on the lower control arm. It was a bear to compress the control arm even after the sway bar link was removed.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate it! Your method is the easy way, I checked all the videos for this ball joint and I do work like you using brute force and tricks, without a fancy lift just a 3 tons and I like learn tricks from guys like you! I’ll waiting your next video.

After many YouTube videos on replacing the ball joint on my subaru outback, I could not get the ball joint back in. I'd like to tell you that using the chain method FINALLY worked. It gave me enough leverage to snap it most of the way back in, then a couple sacks on the control arm frame and good to go! Thanks for the video!

SMA and all the others make that job look impossible to the home mechanic. I am considering pulling the cinch bolts from my car and using antiseize on them and reinstalling. As long as I am not taking anything off the vehicle, it wouldnt hurt. The chain method of pulling the ball joint works great, I will be using that one.

I'm really impressed with the chain and pry bar. I heard you mention having to take the ball joint out to replace a cv axle, but I did mine by removing the cam bolt and loosening the bottom bolt connecting the struts to the steering knuckle. 2 axles took me about an hour and a half and I was pretty happy for not doing them on a subaru before.
