You don’t have to take it off.

I have a 2006 wrx as well, my boots are just leaking out of the end with the smaller clamp on them. Their are no tears or anything like that, the ends just seem to seep a bit when my exhaust heats up the axel grease

Nice job on the video. Thanks for the help.

On the 2006 wrx axles, it does need a tug. There is a snap ring around the end of the axle which locks into the tranny. As the axle is pulled with some force the snap ring will get squished, slipping out of the lock groove in the tranny.

You can find axles at any online parts store for about 60 dollars. Just know that oem axles are a lot stronger than the aftermarket. If your ride is a daily driver with some spirited driving, aftermarket ones are fine.

What year wrx you have?

great video, and totally life saver!! I just have a few questions though if you dont mind answering…
1.) once everything is undone does the axel literally just slip out of the tranny with a little tug like that, nothings holding it in?
2.) where did you get your new axel? new oem’s are very pricey…

Thanks so much!!!

You will not have much room to remove the axle spine from the wheel hub but hey give it a try since it will be the same step sequence, but be prepared if you get stuck.

Have a pitman puller ready just in case. You can order it online from harbor freight for 10 bucks

Hey man nice write up. Do you really have to disconnect the tie rod? I seen a few write ups that say you dont need to as I know the nuckle/rotor can pivot down (looks like in a direction like positve camber). Just wondering if you thik there will be enough room to seperate the axle from the hub ny doing so.

MoeHanGarage says:

Might help to spray some PB blaster or some type of penitrating oil on the pins before you punch them out. Depends on where you live, those pins can be stubburn if they are rusted.

Also check the size of the punch you are using to remove the pins. make sure you are using the correct size.

yeah i have an 02 2.5rs but its mostly all the same stuff. i knocked it fairly hard. heard no pop. the roll pin isnt coming out. now im under the car with limited space so its hard to get a nice swing at it too.

MoeHanGarage says:

i mean 02-04 has female axle ends.

MoeHanGarage says:

02-04 wrx has roll pins and male axle ends. 06 has a male axle end but it has to go over an axle ring.

On 02 – 04 you will not need to jar out the axle like this video. After you remove the pin should come out.

The reason it is easier is because it uses the technique an impact gun uses. Short hard burst to break loose nuts. I use this technique on ratcheting wrenches, socket wrenches and I never busted my knuckles bc of this technique.

Jonathan Schoenly says:

my brother showed me the technique of prying at it. but then dont you have to punch out the roll pin anyways? i am confused as to why this makes it easier.
