I do mean the boots on the power steering rack. But, there’s no power steering fluid right inside them. Just some grease. We’re still digging out. 27″ here in the city. Drifts up to 6 feet high on my property. The plow man just got to our street and is busting through some clogged streets.

Michael Sackstein says:

oh I see what you mean, I thought you meant the boot on the power steering rack. If that were the case it would be a much more difficult job especially with the current snow storm in the northeast, that would really suck! how much snow did you get?

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Indeed it does. Normally, I do this initial round of catch-up maintenance in one shot. But, with winter weather, parts go in one or two at a time.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Actually, the boots just protect the inner tie rods. I’ve done this repair numerous times before and you don’t need to touch the fluid at all.

Terrence Gold says:

Feels good to get that basic stuff taken care of, cheap insurance for sure.

Michael Sackstein says:

if you’re doing steering rack boots, it’s probably a good idea to change the ps fluid out as well. never seen the boots themselves get replaced before but I would imagine you’d have to drain the fluid out before you do this repair.
