A Subaru of this era exposed to winter will, unfortunately, do that. I wish
you luck. I was able to muddle through it. If they’re not too bad, you may
be able to also.

I’ve got a ’98 Legacy project I’m working on and it’s been utter hell. I’m
doing my ball joints on it next, so thanks for posting this cuz now I know
what I have to look forward to. Seriously, I’ve sheared off the heads of at
least half of the bolts I’ve tried removing on this thing.

That’s one way, but it likely wouldn’t have worked in my case. The bolts
were broken, but they were also seized and rusted into the threads of the
steering knuckle. I’ll keep this trick in mind for less stubborn bolts,
though.
