Eugene Hicks says:

Ok will do the fwd works fine the reason I know the awd doesn’t work I actually got stuck in the snow this year and only the front wheeks were spinning

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Offhand, no. Thankfully, I haven’t had to deal with that problem. The only thing I can think for you to check is front and rear differential oil condition and level.

Eugene Hicks says:

A lil off topic but you seem to know a lot about these cars I have a 1995 Subaru legacy l awd my awd doesn’t work only the front wheels pull and I have the fuse out from under the hood that makes it fwd only any ideas

Michael Sackstein says:

@MercedesDieselGuy oh that’s lucky. I think mercedes has it inside the car as well, at least the newer ones do I believe

MercedesDieselGuy says:

No – it’s external, and is bolted to the frame rail under the sliding side door. Very easy.

Michael Sackstein says:

Does the vanagon require you to remove the gas tank to replace the fuel pump?

Michael Sackstein says:

@MercedesDieselGuy Agreed. Unfortunately after the car went to my grandparents it wasn’t very well cared for.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Yowza, That seems really low mileage for that kind of failure.

Michael Sackstein says:

@MercedesDieselGuy you’re lucky, that happened on our old ’95 legacy wagon somewhere in the low 100k mile range.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Still probably too early for that, though. We’ve had two Subarus go to 300,000 miles plus without the float failing.

Michael Sackstein says:

@MercedesDieselGuy the fuel pump doesn’t affect it. That’s just a normal wear & tear item

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Well, the float that gives information to the fuel gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly. But, having changed the fuel pump itself, I have no idea how a failing fuel pump could affect it.

Michael Sackstein says:

@MercedesDieselGuy I believe there is a gas indicator in the same location as the fuel pump that usually goes bad when the gas gauge stops working properly. Anyways if it still works then I guess you don’t have to worry about that, but good to know about I suppose should you ever run into that problem.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Indeed it does. Why do you ask?

Michael Sackstein says:

Does the gas gauge still work on this car?

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Need more info. 5-speed or automatic? I’m guessing auto? If so, there’s a fuse in the engine compartment that can disable the AWD. Check your owner’s manual for more info. Otherwise, I can’t imagine AWD not being functional and the car still moving down the road.

Eugene Hicks says:

I know this is off topic but I have a 1995 legacy and the awd doesn’t work any idea why thanks alot

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Not that I recall. But, I have a lot of subscriptions

playstation2bigs says:

are you a subscriber of “Suspicious0bservers” ??

Michael Sackstein says:

Well it couldve been worse. most cars require removal of the gas tank to replace the fuel pump, and thats a real pain. And hey at least you had two other running vehicles!

MercedesDieselGuy says:

We ended up just pushing the car around. Worked well enough until I had the new pump to install.

Michael Sackstein says:

I had that happen once on my old Saab. You know you can spray starting fluid into the air box or the gas tank and the car will start so at least you can move the car if need be.
