Peter Adrian says:

The pipe is used as a “cheater” extension on the wrench. There’s also a way
to use a second wrench as an extension. Good video, thank you!

chris cowan says:

reminds me of the old days (owned a shop). All I want to know is how the
heck are your nails clean ?!? Great job on your videos.

SilentDude56k says:

Thank you so much for this video; I successfully replaced my water pump
yesterday using this trick. I tried leaving the serpentine belt on to give
me some torque but the pulley ended up turning against the belt because the
bolts were so tight. I had my dad come in with the screwdriver from the top
while I reached into the wheel well with a wrench. I didn’t have a pipe to
use as an extension, but a gloved hand and some hard pushing finally
loosened all three bolts.

Timothy Cole says:

I really appreciate the informative video had a few problems but got the
total job done in about 3 hours, thanks once again.

Ronald Mivec says:

Nice vid bro you can olso let the belt on to remove the pelley bolts and no
need of the screwdriver sorry for the english…. hope you are on the
streets 😉

Steve Eide says:

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll wait on the water pump. What are your
thoughts on the thermostat? Should I wait until it goes or replace after a
certain interval? Any signs I should look for other than a high temp as to
when it is going bad?

richpin06a says:

There are no set replacement schedule on the thermostat, that being said i
would think every 100,000 miles would be good preventative maintenance on
that part.

John Sawyer says:

I didn’t see where the squashed pipe came into use. Protection from
marauding zombies who might want to interfere?

cj122910 says:

Where did the pipe come into play????????

richpin06a says:

@dedski7 Sounds like you have a possible problem with the engine coolant
temp sensor has it and the connector ever been changed.

CCAAASSSCCAAAA says:

Hey Rich (or anyone who has done this), do I have to drain the coolant in
the radiator or block (or both) before attempting to perform this
maintenance?

dedski7 says:

I have the temp gauge and if you look at it like a gas gauge it used to run
at 1/4 tank now its at almost 1/2 tank if that makes sense

dedski7 says:

My temp/radiator level light is on and the car is running slightly warm yet
the fan works thermostat is new and waterpump shows no sign of failure
should I change it anyway I’m stumped

richpin06a says:

You could use a wobble extension to get at the bolts in the 6-7 o’clock
position.

TheMrgrimm76 says:

I dont own a saturn but I am getting ready to change a water pump on a 2000
cavalier, nice trick with the pulley, I dont own an impact wrench or any
other air tools so thanks alot for making this video.

richpin06a says:

I have good success with Permatex High-Temp Red RTV

mjoekingz28 says:

I bought the GMB unit from AAP. IT came with a gasket (a very thin one) and
it says “position new gaskets after coating them on both sides with sealer”
Does this mean, in addition to the gasket I must use RTV, or just spread
some of that gasket dressing they sell in packets at the counter for $1?
thanks RichPin, your videos are superb! A+

studpuppy69 says:

Richpin, can you use the stock gasket that comes new with the water pump or
do you recomend the RTV?

konradmtb says:

I have the saturn 97 sc2 dohc 100k on it. For last 5 months I have to add
17oz of coolant every 2 months (700mi). Does that means the water pump is
bed? Thanks for your videos!

stevea2010 says:

Its stuck on the middle shaft of the pump and just won’t come out

cindy7147 says:

crack the 3 bolts before take out the belt

99yamar6 says:

from experience w/ my 99 SC2, even leaving the belt on doesnt help taking
the bolts out! And my belt was a goodyear gatorback, best belt you can buy,
and it wouldnt grip the pully hard enough to loosen it!

richpin06a says:

The block drain will be enough.

richpin06a says:

@stevea2010 Is it stuck .

razor10000 says:

Thanks brother. Your suggestion worked great.

sala6 says:

Richpin06a: Do you happen to have an idea of how many inch/pounds to
tighten the bolts back on after the replacement?

richpin06a says:

The pulley bolts are 19 ft-lbs.

jdubb408 says:

i woulda just left the belt on and loosed up the bolts on the water pump it
woulda been much eaiser

dedski7 says:

The cap is in good condition and the fan is coming on at the right temp the
car isn’t overheating just running hotter then it should

richpin06a says:

@dakotarazzle It does sound like a bad water pump to me.

Steve Eide says:

Thanks for sharing your Knowledge! I have a 98 SL2 (111,000) with original
water pump. Wondering if I should replace the water pump as preventive
maintenance? Any idea how long these pumps typically last? Your thoughts
appreciated.

blessedubitch says:

@richpin06a now how would you go about getting those bolts off if they were
stripped

RobRokken says:

Stripped mine, so, I took the whole pump out, Prob have to grind the bolts
off now fml..

dedski7 says:

I just bought the car a week ago so I don’t know if its been changed but by
the looks of it I would say nothings been changed

dakotarazzle says:

I have a coolant leak on the passenger side of my Saturn. It only happens
hours after the car has cooled down. Would this be the water pump ? I
recently replaced the radiator. I thought it might be a air pocket but it
has done this for 3 days now and I have been unable to see where it is
leaking. Maybe the fan is not kicking on ?

Thomas J. Hassis says:

Thanks Rich, your videos have taught me a ton. Your much appreciated.

richpin06a says:

No it is a 1.9L Saturn engine.

stevea2010 says:

in other words I have the three screws out and the pulley is loose but I
can’t pivot it off the shaft. Thanks for responding

richpin06a says:

Count your blessing you are not working on say a ford escort were the pump
is run by the timing belt.

Aakash Rami says:

Awesome technique

Cody Mumford says:

How do you just pull the tension like that?
